Prepping 101 – Packing An Evacuation Kit

Evacuations can happen without notice and you may have only minutes to get out of Dodge. How can you be prepared to leave your home without notice with the possibility that you may not have a home to come back to? Having an evacuation kit is essential.

Putting aside the idea of rushing into the wilderness with all the best bush crafting gear money can buy, let’s take a look at the more likely scenario of heading to an out of town motel, friend’s house, or in case of dire emergency, the in law’s.

One thing to keep in mind is that you may or may not have a home to come back to. Sadly, many homes are destroyed by flooding, fire, or other disasters every year, but that doesn’t mean you have to loose everything that you hold dear. A simple USB drive is a great idea for your evacuation kit. Important documents such as proof of ownership for your home, insurance policies, birth certificates etc. can be scanned and saved for recovery. Most of us have an all in one printer capable of doing this, but if not, just take them to a local copy center and they will do it for you. Don;t forget to include some favorite family photos. These can then be printed out to help make your new house a home.

Clothing and toiletries will account for the easiest items to pack up. Keep clothing seasonal by changing it out every few months. This will also help identify the clothes that have magically shrunk over the holiday season, or hang oddly because of that amazing diet you tried. Pay attention to pack a couple sets of undergarments and socks. Toiletries can be purchased at dollar stores, Walmart, or pharmacies in travel sizes to save space.

Keeping in touch will be essential. Consider purchasing an inexpensive prepaid phone and a couple of time cards. Short of that, a battery pack and charging cable for your phone is a bare minimum. Remember to put contact numbers for family and friends as well as possible destinations into the phonebook as well as addresses. A police scanner would also be a great idea as you can use it to keep ahead of the crowd in regards to road closures or other obstacles you may want to avoid.

Your trip may be a long one, so having some snacks and water is a great idea. Even a short drive can take hours when the roads are jammed with everyone trying to get out of the area. Granola bars, trail mix, or other simple snacks are great.

Don’t forget about pets. Rover or Fluffy will need to tag along also (be sure to research evacuation destinations that are pet friendly). Collabsable bowls, disposable littler pans and food are the bare minimum. Consider a chew toy, poop bags, and perhaps booties too. Thees items should be in a separate bag from yours.

Packing it all up is easy peasy! You don’t need, or perhaps even want the most expensive tactically designed military pack. A gym bag, large student backpack or small duffle will suffice. Keep it in an easy to reach place, preferably near the front door for ease of access. Remember, you may not have time to dig to the back of your bedroom closet to find it when you need it.
