Actually, there is no perfect answer to the one gun question. But after years as professional gunsmith, firearms dealer, competitive shooter, and gunaholic, I have come as close as I can get for myself.
Maybe as close as anyone can get?

The one gun I choose is the Chinese / Canadian M14 rifles. These are incredible values, have been getting better and better for quality control over their decades long run, and one of the few Military type semi auto rifles NOT RESTRICTED in Canuckistan. These rifles are labelled either as 7.62 NATO, or .308 Win, depending on which batch they came in with. In reality, regardless of what it says on the outside, most of these rifles have long chambers, more suitable for the thicker, stronger cases in 7.62 NATO. A gunsmith check of the head space will reveal if any individual Chinese M14 is suitable for the safe use of .308 WIN ammunition. in my experience, about 1/3 of these rifles, especially the newer ones, have SAMMI spec .308 Win head space.
As a former professional gunsmith, with decades of extensive experience on GENUINE US GI M14 rilfes, and the American and Chinese clones, I feel that a Chinese M14, in good condition, or possibly with a few US GI parts as upgrades, is the best bang for the buck available in Canada for a prepper rifle. If I could only have one guns, this is the gun I would grab in a SHTF situation.

Recently acquired PAL, burned off a lot of internet the past couple of days trying to climb out of the shallow end of the learning curve, with non-restricted rifles.

Once I get my .22LR fix in, am looking at the next calibre of rifle I'd like to get. Went on the Canadian Forces website, to see what they shoot. My thought being, if there's ever a reason for ammunition manufacturers to have to focus on making a single type, the cartridge used by the military is likely the one that will be made. Seemed reasonable to buy a rifle capable of firing what they fire. Their mainstay rifle is the Colt C7A2, which fires 5.56 NATO cartridges. The 5.56, if I've understood, is very similar to the .223. So close, that I can fire a .223. from a 5.56 calibre rifle. But, a 5.56 cannot safely be fired from a .223 rifle, because of higher gas pressures. Unfortunately, the options for buy a non-restricted 5.56 are pretty limited, have only found a couple of guns, so far.

Prepping against a focused stream of 7.62 NATO is easy, because they can be fired in a .308 calibre rifle; the full selection of .308s are fair game. But the 7.62s are only used in the military's bigger guns & sniper rifles, not the high-consumption automatics.

I dunno, assuming you run out of stockpiled ammunition (for whatever reason) do you think it's worth getting a 5.56 instead of .223 rifle, as a prep against potential ammunition supply limitation?

.

Background: I went on a 10 day point to point 92 km hiking expedition in Northern Manitoba with a good friend of mine last week - let's call him Pete. I shot small game with a .22LR while my buddy fished. We got by with more than enough food for the both of us, but he pulled in at least 4x the total calories compared to my haul. In 8 days of early morning hunts, I managed to take 2 jack rabbits, 1 grouse, 2 squirrels, and 6 prairie dogs. Meanwhile, Pete brought a minimum of 2 pikes to the table every day. In fact, on Day 3 he even caught more fish than we needed (we had rabbit, 1 walleye, 2 largemouth bass and 1 trout), and he had to throw back a bunch of pike.

I'd like to get back into fishing. I never actually enjoyed it, but as far as effort to calorie ratios go, it seems to be very effective.

Can you recommend a versatile and reliable rod-reel-lure combo? I need something that packs small, is sensitive enough to feel small bites, with light enough line to cast far but strong enough to pull in 6-8 lb fish, and all-around lures that don't snag often but can attract a wide variety of fish. Pete doesn't have a lightweight or compact set-up, and he brought a huge tackle box. I'd rather get fishing equipment advice from people who have more experience. My whole philosophy of bugging out is to bring the least amount of stuff that can do the largest amount of things.

Thanks

Not the gun, just the balls. We have an ever growing nuisance murder of crows that eat anything in our gardens, and generally piss me right off. I don't want to kill them and noise machines aren't an option here. So I came up with the idea of paint balls and slingshots. But, what's the environmental impact from the paint balls? Is the paint harmful to the birds? I don't want to kill them or poison the food chain or the land.
Any advice or words of wisdom would be appreciated.
Thanks in advance,
Dragonwriter

I'm moving into an area of prepping that is completely new for me and that is protection, i.e. weapons. If society falls apart, I want to be able to protect myself and my home, so I'm hoping to learn more about appropriate weapons in Canada. I know we're not like the US, where you can wander down to Walmart and buy yourself pretty much any kind of weapon you want! I'm interested in learning more from people here about what is legal (for, say, guns, knives, other weapons) and what is illegal. What am I allowed to have in my home? What am I allowed to carry with me? What do I need to know about storing weapons at home? Any help/advice you have is greatly appreciated. I'm not looking to build a massive arsenal, just to get 1 or 2 items, just in case society does completely break down.
