I am just starting out small this year. Trying out a few different ways. Vertical towers, the Kratky method, and the horizontal rail method. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bWebs3ID6Hw

I will have power to burn from mid Feb to mid oct, but if I want to grow through the remaining time in the winter as best I can estimate I am going to need to put up 1500 to maybe 2000 watts of solar just to carry my growing on through the winter. I may be over estimating, time will tell.Luckly I already have that many panels put away so no extra cost there. I dont know anyone doing this let alone off grid so everything is a bit of a guess.

I had completely forgot that I was carrying a knife in my jacket pocket, just skipped my mind. I take off my jacket and throw it on the conveyer for the x ray machine like normal and this lady running the machine says whats in there,in the pocket? I say nothing..nothing is in the pocket, what is it? she barks back, and I notice a twirly red flashing light going off above her station and at the same time I notice the light I can see two guys running over towards me from my right, with one guy coming up along side me and the other right in my face. They are starting to ask me questions, but they can see I am in a partial body cast and using a cane ( healing from my last truck accident) So the x ray lady brings the knife over to the two guys holding me up and as soon as I seen the knife I realized what I had done.
I explained as best I could that I had just forgot to put it in the check in luggage. They check me out, and seeing as I was busted up and traveling with two women they understood I didnt fit a profile that concerned them. I had to forfeit the knife, but they let us on the plane...they did swab down my cast checking for explosive residue.

I am giving up on having a cell phone. I just dont get good service where I live, always dropping out, missing calls and such, never mind the stupid cost for having something that doesnt work when I need it to, plus I am tired of the endless software updates that seems to make my phone less useable each time, and dont even get me started on its surveillance capabilities (of me) that I ironically pay for.

I can go back to a land line, thats going to be 30-35 dollars a month or so, I am ok with that cost, at least the phone will work.
I have heard of Magic Jack and some other over the computer phones and am looking into those as well, I see lots on online reviews of the services, but I just dont know of anyone personally using them. It looks like you just plug a card into a usb port and plug your land line phone into the card and you are good to go. This has me thinking that if I keep a old laptop in my truck when I go to the city, I should be able to plug the card into my laptop, the phone into my card and have phone service near any free wifi locations in the city, of which there are lots. Still looking into this, one thing I like is the cost, its dirt cheap 3 year plans for 99 dollars or 5 years for 139.00.

Any users of such services on here?

As you know from my posts of about 2 years ago I road my lead acid batteries down to nothing (literally) , then started building a new bank up with LiFeP04. It was a little over a year ago I bought my first ones at nose bleed high prices of around 1000 Canadian for 1kwhr, then I found a Canadian distributor (last Sept) that started up his business importing directly from China, outside of U.S distribution channels, and his list price for a near equal product (in my opinion) brought my cost down to roughly less than 600 per kwhr (very reasonable). I have used his product in a few instalations now and performance has been flawless. I am not going to name his company on the forum but if someone is interested just PM me and I will give his you his web site.
Of course I also started to investigate ordering individual cells and BMS boards to build up batteries cheaper, I joined some battery forums where the slide rule guys hang out, and learned from them where and who they buy from. If I was just starting out again to build up a battery bank this is the way I would do it simply from a low cost perspective. These links will probably expire as the sellers get in new stock but for the moment they will be good if someone is looking for a product they can trust.
https://www.aliexpress.com/item/4001240385597.html?spm=2114.12010612.8148356.1.646451c0DZftG2

The above is 3.5 kwhrs for 1000 Canadian, and comes with all the hardware for assembly even the case if you wish. That works out to something like 300 Canadian per 1kwhr...dirt cheap, in fact less than lead acid. You could have a greater than 10kwhr (useable) battery for just a little more than 3000.00. You need a lead acid battery of about 20kwhrs to equally it in performance (because you should not take lead acid down below 50% regularly) If you dont think that is a good deal I suggest you get a price quote for a deep cycle 20kwhr lead acid battery bank!

You just have to add your own BMS and this one should work fine.
https://www.aliexpress.com/item/4000221411094.html?spm=a2g0o.detail.1000014.27.19f27966fcn9eP&gps-id=pcDetailBottomMoreOtherSeller&scm=1007.13338.183347.0&scm_id=1007.13338.183347.0&scm-url=1007.13338.183347.0&pvid=273b898f-9501-473a-b41f-6d3dad1aeed5&_t=gps-id:pcDetailBottomMoreOtherSeller,scm-url:1007.13338.183347.0,pvid:273b898f-9501-473a-b41f-6d3dad1aeed5,tpp_buckets:668%230%23131923%2358_668%23808%234093%23759_668%23888%233325%2313_3338%230%23183347%230_3338%233142%239890%232_668%232846%238115%23809_668%232717%237563%23505_668%231000022185%231000066055%230_668%233422%2315392%23504

or this one.

https://www.aliexpress.com/item/4000355365324.html?spm=a2g0o.detail.1000014.13.2f9917edJ8zoPt&gps-id=pcDetailBottomMoreOtherSeller&scm=1007.13338.183347.0&scm_id=1007.13338.183347.0&scm-url=1007.13338.183347.0&pvid=005e9b18-9d3b-4e6b-ac3d-b4cbdb98aed5&_t=gps-id:pcDetailBottomMoreOtherSeller,scm-url:1007.13338.183347.0,pvid:005e9b18-9d3b-4e6b-ac3d-b4cbdb98aed5,tpp_buckets:668%230%23131923%2358_668%23808%234093%23759_668%23888%233325%2313_3338%230%23183347%230_3338%233142%239890%232_668%232846%238115%23809_668%232717%237563%23505_668%231000022185%231000066055%230_668%233422%2315392%23616

I would be going the above way if I was starting out to build up a battery bank, I am not doing so because I already have most all the batteries I could want already, will just add one more next year and then I am good for life with a usable battery bank greater than 12kwhrs, in 15- 20 years from now I should still have about 10kwhrs of useable capacity. Of course I dont think I will be here in 20 years , thats why I can say I have bought my last battery bank. My total cost once I buy my last battery next year will bring in my costs to just shy of 8000.00 dollars. The first 4 I bought at that high price really skewed the costs upward. If I would have bought all my batteries from the new guy who started up I would have only spent 6000.00 total. Such is life, but this is why my green house project is delayed, I had to spend serious coin to resolve my future power needs.

So, I have now hammered out 4000km on my electric bike. Used mostly in the spring, summer and fall, but some riding done in the winter, down to -15 -20 to see how it performed. I have to say riding in the winter at such temps is not enjoyable not at all, the -20 air just cuts through your clothing at 40kmhr but the bike performed just fine.
This bike was bought as a toy, a serious toy, a play thing, a exercise tool, a learning tool about how far small scale electric transit has come. Lots of reasons I bought it.
It has performed outstanding and I have learned all kinds of things about electric bikes in the 1.5 years I have had it. As it comes it is a fine bike, the fat tires just roll over everything, it comes from the factory putting out a few km per hr over the legal limit of 32km, the motor is under rated in my opinion at 500 watts. As is comes from the factory it absolutely puts that out in fact a couple hundred watts more, peak watts. I have found it to be a easy bike to dick with and milk more power out of it, in fact I have had the motor putting out as much as 1500 watts in bursts and I regularly run it at 1000 watts continuous without problems and at speeds of 45 km per hr. I have it performing like a low speed motor cycle. I have worked out the costs and even though I already have another fat bike frame and wheels, I could not build a bike from ordered parts, and even with my labour considered free, I just could not build a bike that would perform as well as this one does, for the price I paid for the bike (1800). The same bike now is $2050 I think. I have built all kinds of things for this bike, havnt done a trailer yet, but thats next.
Anyway, if you havent considered electric bikes before, think about getting one. I have found the performance to be outstanding, and if anyone is interested in the brand I bought, I can give you all kinds of tips on improving its performance. Once fall comes comes this bike will be parked up, but likely wont see many more km as I plan to buy myself another one next year to play with of the same brand (maybe a different model) because one is none and two is one.
Currently using 30+ amphr battery at 52 volts so thats roughly 60-75 km range at full power (40kmhr+), throttle only, much more if you pedal. If you drop your speed down to 25-32kmhr you should hit about 90 to 100 km range, throttle only, with maybe 150 km range (or more) possible if you pedal.
The most I have done in one ride is 50km, the bike is capable of much more on a full charge, I just dont like sitting on a bike seat for more than that.

Yes, I like propane, not for large area heating but for cooking and those on demand water heaters. These tanks I am stacking in the picture (total will be 12, 20s and 8 thirties) are all expired tanks I have got for free. This stack will total 400 pounds in this location and another 300 spread out in other spots on the property so I have 700 total.
My goal is 1000, so by next year, so long as people keep giving me expired tanks I should get there. I budget 100 pounds per year for cooking (usually under that), using my electronic ignition stove, (160-180 pounds if a pilot light stove, yes I have measured, have both), of course I use so little because for 6 months of the year I have a fire going and there is always a pot of water sitting on it so when I want to say boil potatoes I dont have to use gas to bring water to a boil, I have boiling water available right from the pot on the wood stove the gas just keeps it boiling the potatoes. If you cant get the tanks for free then its really not worth storing propane this way, buying tanks new would be really expensive! If you fill up at the typical gas stations, I think 20s are 20 dollars and 30s are 30 dollars right now, but filling up that way is expensive ( well not too bad I guess). If you are rural, ask around, ask the old timers using propane ( farmers) in your area on how you might get propane cheaper. I bet if you explore other options you can find it for 1/4 the price.

I should add that if your only experience using propane is with a gas Barbeque, you might think my numbers must be off. I can blow through a 20 pounder in a month easy on the Barbeque, most modern electronic ignition propane cooking stoves use very little propane by comparison.
