I tend to have a few "junk it up" things here and there..

I am a touch worried on trying to figure out how to do my different upgrades and at the same time, keep my place looking on the edge and poorish.. I am sure I will get creative and make it happen..

But it got me thinking after reading the hedge post, are you a clean tidy place and do you plan to lets some things fade while keeping a tidy look.. or are you a junk it place that will make sure to keep that look up to help make folks think a) poor or poorish.. b) barter always welcome..

I LOVE that those that expect full pay will give me discounts based on looks, I have honestly had a guy look at it and go.. hmm well I can take this off.. or have someone pull in and go.. I need this part.. seems to be me that you might have it.. BARTER is awesome..

Everyone knows that I buy extra's at farm sales and that i "might a extra xyz hanging around second hand"

locally at least, you can really see the keep it up/upgrading.. they are standing out like a pretty splashy.. we have money (or at least the illusion of money) and then there are a good amount of normally doing good that you can see the downgrades happening and then there are the "junk it places"

Owing that there is still 3’ of hard pack snow along the driveway and that I can’t really get quotations right now, I’m looking at a way of getting notification that a vehicle or someone came down my driveway (about 400’ long).
Looking for tried and true advice on a security camera system for an acreage property.

We have a monitored alarm system as we both work away from the house and sometimes have to travel for work. It has become clear that RCMP won’t respond to rural alarm unless there are 2 or more sensors involved (eg a door sensor and a motion detection). Now our alarm company has advised us that police response is unlikely unless there’s camera recording, preferably “live”, of the event.

Quote for a quality system is just shy of $3K for 3 cameras, install, recording system, UPS, etc. This just doesn’t seem to be worth it. Mrs HP and I are thinking that at that point, this is 3x our insurance deductible worth (that is, report a claim to insurances and pay the deductible trice) and therefore, really hard to justify.

Quickly glancing at Costco online, there are systems out there for a few hundred bucks. Granted, their reviews all average 50% and those reviews are echoes of what’s online a bestbuy and like stores.

Questions then are:

1) are camera system really worth the expense?
2) is a professional system really worth the premium over a DYI package?
3) any recommendations on systems you may have?
4) what is the level of effort for a DYI kit?

In a SHTF scenario, how does increased immigration affect the personal security of your family?

I perceive that many of the people newly immigrating from countries such as Syria and other war zones have experienced great hardship. I see their endurance could certainly benefit those that haven't had this experience.

On the other hand, many of these people suffer from trauma and PTSD and place an added stress on an already over-worked health care system. Further difficulty in communication and culture may also present some barriers to Society as a whole.

I don't want to discuss the politics behind immigration. The fact does however exist that many members of this group are unable to contribute to Society in the short-term. In a similar way if my family was relocated to Saudi Arabia with no one being able to speak the language and not having an income other than Government subsidy. What happens if this is disrupted?

Should this be a factor? How much is too little assistance and how much becomes too much? I ask this question because of some personal experience that I have. Relocation (in some cases) isn't working out for the community and not for the people that have immigrated. The total cost will be finalized in time. What are the alternatives?

CPTED is an effective security process and is used on or in a wide range of efforts.
In short, it’s used to prevent crime form occurring. Below are a few examples and I will try and make them also relevant to this groups efforts. Some are obvious and we have heard them on local TV broadcasts. Numbered in random order and not by priority.

1. Keep perimeter of home free of shrubs that can conceal a person lying in wait.

2. Keep pathways to your home clean and easy to use. In addition to obvious personal enjoyment and lessening of trip hazards... it will encourage a person to use them. In a preppier world, this will encourage the average lazy twit to use them and will permit you to see and follow them easier. Sort of like herding the cattle to keep them in a nice easy to “ monitor” line.

3. Showing that a property is maintained, may attract a person looking to pilfer something from a person demonstrating possible wealth.. but it also sends a signal of it being maintained By an active person. If homes nearby are easy to access and appear less maintained, they may choose one that is darker yet of equal size ( potential for stuff to liberate). It’s a mixed bag and while it may not fully prevent an unwelcome visit,it may hold one off a bit. Obvious show of wealth or stuff will attract attention but most low end people look for easy targets.

4. Like shrubbery around the house, keeping surrounding woods clear of debris or standing trees will aid in keeping your line of sights cleaner and provide less immediate cover to others. It will also help avoid having a tree blow over on your house, shed or vehicles just when your in the middle of a crisis. Who needs a half broken roof when things are down and it’s snowing or a tree crushing your tractor or generator shed.....

5. Changing routes on your way home or to places will avoid people getting to know your pattern, what your driving, how well you look....

6. Repairing broken items like fences, windows etc show a presence and being lived in. In survival situation, people will look for both lived in and Un-lived in locations to seek shelter or steal from. It’s a mixed bag of nuts but again, if a person is looking for a simple place to shelter in, they will likely choose the more abondoned place as their first choice. Now, if a place is abandoned, you can also expect city urchins or others to wish to settle in there. Depending on who they are, this could be good or bad. So, and I am not recommending any illegal acts, but one may wish to chat with current owner of said derelict home, barn, hunt camp.. and ask them to tear it down, burn it.... now, instead of waiting for someone to set up house in it!

7. Keeping things locked / padlocks on outbuildings, gates etc do two things. They keep honest curious George type people out and they also show breakinin activity. If you are walking out to shed and notice broken lock, you can pretend you didn’t notice and keep walking by and go obtain help etc. A decent rouse when coming up on something suspicious is to act normal and maybe swear out loud. Mumble in loud enough voice about Ah shit, I forgot I needed to go into town to get that wood etc. If buddy is inside, he will likely associate with forgetting something and now believe he has an hour plus to move along. Important thing is to act quickly and avoid appearing that you noticed anything suspicious. Play dumb....but just don’t stand there looking at whatever it was that gave things away. You don’t want to simply open an unlocked door and come face to face with buddy. A lock won’t stop someone but it does provide a visual.

Got to go look for pumpkins with wife, back later!

It seems that some people are sceptical of whether the police department has their best interests at heart. Being a retired cop, I've dealt with this at times. For example, African Canadians in Toronto (in particular areas) have voiced their opinion that the police have been repressive to them as a group. Other ethnic groups may well feel similarly. This opinion seems to extend to other groups who have a similar outlook. Some examples include Native Canadians, gun rights groups and those concerned with environmental or gay rights.

Do you feel that police purposefully target their enforcement on these and other groups unfairly? If so, why do you feel this to be the case?

My personal perspective is that this is not the case. My experience is that the police respond to a particular threat which is actual, not imagined. It is not a police function to make law, rather than to enforce it. The area to be enforced is a matter of priority (you don't give out parking tickets, when there's a robbery in progress).

Pay attention to new sounds, or a change in the dynamic of people/things around you.
-Avoid/limit time in areas which are unduly exposed. (ie.-china town in Toronto has crowded/cramped sidewalks, no barriers and fairly exposed to the roadside.)
-I read an article saying that in the London attacks people started going to assist the fallen/injured and the terrorists came back to finish off the fallen and started attacking those who were assisting. I guess don't help unless you know its safe...avoid being another victim and help when you can.
-Call 911 asap. Don't assume someone else has. ever.
-don't hang around the scene and be a "rubber necker" Get out of there. If your not helping, your in the way, and/or increasing your risk of being a victim.

Attacks like this make me reflect on how trusting and fragile our society is. I don't think that's a bad thing overall, but a reflection on how we can all work together and get along for the most part. These incidents though really show how exposed we are in day to day life. I mean...a thin yellow line is all that separates us on the roads daily as we pass our fellow citizens. We flock to festivals, sporting events, tourist attractions...and for the most part there are little to know incidents.

They can be expensive to look after medically, feed, train and care for. In a survival situation they pose an added burden on your resources.

Depending on the breed, some make good protectors and all seem to provide advanced warning of company or intruders. Other than an early warning (invaluable in itself) the physical threat of a canine is usually over-rated. There are few pets which would actually attack a human to begin with. Most are socialized to a degree and have more bark than bite.

Our Society arguably has been over reactive to dog bites. Many municipalities demand that the dog is immediately destroyed in such an occurrence. The family dog raised from a Puppy, is taught not to growl, show his teeth or bite anyone. Because of this, we can't expect our pets to provide a real physical deterrent to an intruder (although this may be the case).

Enter the Guard/Attack dog... Dogs that are have been specifically trained to guard and protect humans/property and attack on command. They are very costly to train. In many jurisdictions, the liability for the dog's behaviour lies squarely on the Owner. As a result, many Owner's maintain liability insurance for such an eventuality.

Having and owning a guard dog is a huge investment on the part of the Owner. The dog cannot roam free, so the area under protection are required to be fenced and signed. Because it's signed doesn't automatically mean that the Owner is free from liability, should a member of the public become injured.

As those of you who have been trained in the military can attest, silencing an attack dog is easier than one might think. Many dogs give away their position warning the Owner (and the trespasser) of their exact position. Dogs usually bite high at the closest accessible area of the target. Padding held-out can become the bite point and a sweeping knife can silence the K-9 (assuming that the intruder elects not to use a firearm). Obviously the attack method employed is dependent on the training methods used, but this is a good rule-of-thumb.

Your family pet will provide an excellent warning for intruders. Unless the dog has been trained to take on an intruder, don't let it confront a perpetrator. Perhaps it could succeed in chasing him away, but your pet will be placed in harm's way and possibly be injured or killed.

A valuable resource could be lost; at a time when its needed most. Don't make unreasonable expectations as to your dogs contribution to the survival scenario.
