Interesting developments going on. I have been wondering what Russia was going to do when their mostly friendly to Russia leader dies or leadership otherwise changes.
Ukraine and Belarus were the only two states that hadnt joined Nato and we all know what happened when Ukraine started considering such a move (or Georgia). It lost its valuable strategic areas, the Donets industrial basin and Crimea.
From the viewpoint of Russia I cant see them waiting around only to see Nato Arms and forces move closer to Moscow, much closer. I dont see them taking the whole country but rather balkanizing it, maybe moving the border further west by 100km or so. They would be fools not to do so. In their place, I would have already given the order. It will be interesting to see what happens.

Natural areas to secure would be right up to the Dnieper river cleaving off a good buffer zone from south east Belarus, and from the north the area up to the Zapadnaya Dvina river. That would still leave a small middle section of Belarus unsecured on the Russian border but from Russian perspective they might be able to live with that as these two new areas will partially flank that area.

Wide number of topics to cover. Nuke, biological, currency, standard invasions of little countries escalating...

Here is one that most of us are very aware of and that is bringing down of the grid.

https://qz.com/1416362/the-uk-war-games-cyberattacks-that-could-black-out-moscow/

Huge impact yet a likely viewed as a soft means of grabbing people’s attention. If you happen to be in that city or region, you are certainly going to be in a world of pain. What will it look like if power was taken down for a month?

If you are not directly affected in Nova Scotia, BC or Ontario, what would affect be on us canucks if strike was in California or NYC?

Things that come to mind are obvious impact on financial market/crash. Importation of goods from china via California and Washington ports would cease to exist and that impact on jobs and supply of goods here in Canada.

The interesting thing is no matter what the trigger or event is, our preps are all going to help and I am real happy to hear all the ideas on this board about food, power, radios, procurement of food etc. Safe to say, many of us have our ideas as to what will bring us down but it is very important that while not losing sight of what gets us especially motivated, that we put aside niche issues and always build upon the greater impact on our very complex lives. We all need water and food, but then medicines come into play, impact to family, issues about when we are out of town on business or pleasure and how to get back or survive in-situ.

Circling back to what will hit us, I tend to lean towards hydro or financial hit/hack or outright collapse. Both are a tie for likelihood, but there are all manner of other scenarios and other then a nuke attack, the end results are almost all the same. It will only depend on severity of the event.

Prep away folks, it’s all a good plan

There're many disasters that could occur that would result in a higher than normal release of radiation. Living a 1000 km away from a nuclear reactor site or large city that may be targeted by the enemy is no guarantee that you will be prepared (or even know about) the fallout that will be an extreme hazard.

When considering this I thought about the practicality of having a Geiger counter. On one hand it would be something cool to have, but on the other I'm not too sure if it's practical. After all I don't think that a nuclear incident is likely possible to occur that I wouldn't find out about (a mushroom cloud in the distance would give it away) :-)

In looking at the Geiger counters usually available for purchase, the bulk of them have a maximum reading of less than 1000 microsievert or one millisievert or 0.1 Rad per hour. To put this in-perspective, a human being (dependent upon previous radiation exposure) can absorb about 100 Rads in a single dosage which would cause radiation sickness (including nausea, lower white blood cell count). This is usually non-fatal however 5% of those afflicted will develop a fatal form of cancer later in life.

If in this context I have a Geiger counter that has a maximum reading of 0.1 rads per hour, I have 1000 hours to het out of the area! If the radiation is much higher, I would have no idea nor would I be able to estimate my survivability. What is required is a Counter that measures a much higher measurement. What am I missing here????
