She thought she was on seventh heaven beineg allowed into the back storafe room, but she earned her keep.
That same night, we had a pack rat invade our space. Do those suckers ever stink! Next morning we went to town and bought a cage trap, got it baited and set. I then stapled hardware cloth over the opening where it was coming in. After that was done, and I had a quick shower, DH proclaimed that I shouldn't hace to cook lunch. He took me into town for a treat. It was very nice. That night, I had just gone to bed, when I (we) heard the trap click shut. Sure enough there was a fat and sassy and none to happy pack rat yapping at me. I moved the trap out to the front porch for the night. That thing bounced the trap until it got part of the trap up on the mat, then proceded to chew a hole in the mat. Boy, did we ever tale that thing a long ways away, so it couldn't come back.
Hopefully, that will be the end of that story, other than cleaning out where it has been.
KK

Don't know what moles get up to, but I would try very hard to keep them from being able nest in it, just in case; murphy's law and all. This past week I have been destroying the remainder of the house removing the lath and plaster and getting to the last of the rodent nests out of the walls. Gosh but there were some huge nests. The chewing going on in the walls kept us awake half the winter last year.

It was costly, but before we put up new studding to hold insulation, we used 1/8" hardware cloth to cover the ceilings and down the edge of the walls which are brick. There is no way I want a repeat of what went on in those walls before we ripped them out. Those varmits are going to have to make do in the attic this winter. Next year I hope to finally solve them getting in there as well.

A couple of days ago I kept hearing noises in the basement but couldn't see anything when I checked it out. I thought maybe a really big mouse had gotten in with fall coming and all. I couldn't find anything though. One day I needed a funnel and as I don't have much for cupboards, they too have been ripped out, everything is down in the basement in plastic drawer units. Any ways, I went on the hunt down there trying to figure out where a funnel might have ended up when something wet hit my head. Darn, but was a blob of wet poop. I took the chance and looked up and way up on the top of some heavy duty shelving amongst my kitchen appliances, there was a black hen doing a rather good job of blending in. She had crapped over the edge and that is what alerted me. There were four eggs up on the shelf so she was very lucky she crapped on my head or she would have starved to death down there in the dark. She must have gotten in the house while we were hauling rubble out. varmints.

I've started to put items in an unused, unplugged fridge in my garage - things that can freeze, here in Ontario, like sugar, flour, tea, salt. No canned items. The mice can't get into the fridge because it's all steel. A relative uses a 'retired' freezer for storing their animal feed - they just replaced the top with a piece of plywood on hinges to keep out the beasts.
I've had varmints chew through plastic buckets and other storage containers.
