I'm now actively looking into purchasing my fruit trees as this year's project.
Any advice on when to plant in the fall?
Zone 5, but am looking for hardy to zone 3 or 4...apple, pear, and hopefully peach or nectarine, but prospects are low for that.
I plant them whenever I can get my hands on some. Spring through Sept. They are guaranteed most times, for one year, even if they sell them to you too late in the year for optimal planting. (I buy 5 gal size or up) Some of the sale trees are kind of knarly, but at up to 75% off I find a spot to stick them. I have had to get replacements a few times, but mostly they have done just fine. I even had some survive all winter in their pots out in the barn.
I find that most varieties of fruit trees do just fine but individual ones within a type may not. I have had 3 apricot trees die off but 2 have put up with all the conditions and are doing great. Same with some cherries and plums. Thats why I keep buying even the funky poor shaped trees on the cheap. I can always replace them if they die with nice ones in the spring.
