How practical is hydroponics from a prepper's perspective?

We live in Calgary with extremely short growing season and often in the middle of summer we get a snowstorm or frosty night then all our plants die. I have tried indoor hydroponics but didn't have very good success. Have any of you done hydroponics year round with good result? Do you think it's practical?
