Everyone I know involved in self sufficiency is burnt out at this point of year. A friend recently said, "I beg at this point for a hard freeze". The point of personal permission to bring the long growing season to its final rest. There is still a couple things to get done but I am beginning to wind down.

If you are like me...You might like to watch a few shows over the winter. May I recommend the classic 1975 BBC series, Survivors.
Its dated, and there will be plenty of facepalm moments...but after I had first watched the whole three seasons worth, I realised it had gone through all of the major problems, moral conundrums, accidents and losses, that would be common in these situations. I've come to recommend it as a teaching tool. Enjoy.

This is the first season https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ak1SrFGXgA4&list=PL60B5B3443161A19C and set up for the easiest watching.
The second season starts with a real shock...and the real lessons begin. That one you can find on your own

I do agree that the series Survivors is wonderful. It can really make you think , getting you motivated
to prepare for more areas and situations you had not thought of.

I watched it last winter, but I will be watching it again this winter.

I finished the first season of Survivors Thursday night at midnight. I planned on starting the second season on Friday night but I fell asleep at 9:30pm. 😳 I must be getting old. 🙄

I am hooked. I feel that the series was very well made and not too many face clapping moments, although I know what I look like after a hard day's work and those folks tend to look cleaner and better pressed than I would.

My biggest take-aways so far are; don't be too trusting too quickly and seeds, seeds, seeds. I think I will order next year's seeds this week. It the sh!t hit the fan now, we'd only be planting potatoes, garlic and Jacob's Cattle beans next year. Now I am hungry for garlic potatoes and baked beans.

In the near future, I will definitely be ordering the Survivors series on DVD so the family and I can watch it together.

Garlic, check. MrsC5 just planted it yesterday. Jacobs cattle bean, double check. Its my recommendation for easy ground beans and you can get it in bulk right in the grocery store.
Yes, there is nothing like doing a marathon movie binge, with a two ltr bottle of coke and other sugar products, watching till your eyes bleed, there is a buzzing in you brain and you find yourself muttering to yourself, "...cant sleep. clowns will eat me. cant sleep. clowns will eat me...." .Good times.

speaking of seeds and seed potatoes , I think we need to drum up a list of varieties that yield better,
and are less prone to diseases etc.

In a SHTF , no point in growing produce with poor yield

I tried some new tomato varieties this year with either zero yield or they just never had time to ripen,
or got blossom end rot. Glad I had some of the my old standbys planted.

I would like to try more produce varieties that would grow well in pots in a greenhouse , but with high yield .
Such as pole beans , so will need a good variety

In the garden , I tried sweet potato this year , yield : only 2 huge sweet potatoes
