I found this documentary on netflix. it follows a group of trappers and hunters that live on the taiga river in the siberian wilderness, surviving off the land. I think it is worth watching for sure. It shows a wide variety of useful techniques and skillsets that are used while truely living off the land. everything from trap construction to dugout canoes, how to make snow skis, bug repellant, and the benifets of a good dog. also gets into other self reliant aspects of living without the safety net of the almight walmart.
has anyone else watched it?
[edit:] also just wanted to point out for those who do watch the video, they all have an sks rifle. says alot about their extreme versatility as a firearm 😀
See you all after.
Actually he had a Mosin Nagant strapped to his back while trapping. 🙂 they did a close-up while he was navigating some branches on his snowmobile.
I watched it over the weekend. I'm never going to complain about-35 weather ever again. One other thing to note was that they worked hard all year round, preparing things in stages based on the climate. Living off the land is definitely so much more involved than simply hunting deer/moose/rabbits, as most preppers are inclined to think.
where is the link, please?
it is on netflix right now if you have it. I havnt found a link for it on the internet, but you can watch a few clips from the movie on youtube here: http://www.youtube.com/results?search_query=happy+people+a+year+in+taiga&oq=happy+people+a+year+&gs_l=youtube.1.2.0l5.1165.11602.0.13752.20.11.0.9.9.0.78.753.11.11.0...0.0...1ac.1.7o_4gEXKfpc
yes rabbit you are right. they are definatley preparing for the coming seasons all year round. spring is for planting, summer is for building and reparing structures, fall is for harvesting, preparing traps and getting the outposts ready for winter, and winter is for hunting food and furs for the spring. its a nice simple cycle, and these people seem very equipt to do it. it is interesting to hear some of the stories of how they were dropped off in the middle of nowhere by the cold war era communist government and left to start a life for themselves with nothing but a rifle and a loaf of bread.
See you all after.
Buggie,
Thanks for the tip. Watched it this weekend, must watch it again. I missed too much.
