They havent actually used the term "prepper" in any of the multiple articles that Ive read involving this story. But I think it is pretty clear that they probably were. who knows, maybe they were even members of this forum? I have read several other stories similar to this one recently but they took place in the states. I cant help but think that this just gives them another excuse to lay down new laws and to profile us as being a higher risk of comitting murder, or being a terrorist. This does not help us at all. Thoughts?
I think it would be a bit of a stretch to equate this with prepping. Yes there are wack jobs in every subject but this is a man charged with a murder who has done more illegal things and been found out. Yes, you COULD see this as reflecting on preppers and prepping.... but again for the media to label the mainstream group in this light would be quite a stretch I think. The laws already exist to deal with the issues raised in this story. As for "helping us at al"... I personally am not looking for "help". I just want to be left alone and have the resources to help myself. Preppers aren't out to change the world nor bring about anarchy. We do not seek political change as a philosophy or reason for existence. We are not looking to bring about the end of the world so we can recreate it in our image. We are about self reliance, about family values, about returning to a simpler time. A time where a person was judged based on who he or she was...NOT on your position, your wealth or who you knew. We are also about community and a part of prepping is to have some resources to assist those who will need help if something ever does happen. THAT in no way is reflected in the news story. Just my 2 cents.
you have hit the nail right on the head bear. I have been chatting with a lot of preppers over late and most of us think like you do but there are the few that feel like it is them against the government. We get enough bad publicity from these types of wackjobs we dont need the militant types that have no skills except for fighting bringing us down
wackos like this are a breed of thier own, this guy(s) comitted murder and finally got caught... he doesnt sound like a prepper at all sounds more like the kind of crazy person that would see in one of these "shoot em up" type movies. Im glad he got caught and all those bombs were found, justabear summed it up pretty damn good.....
Well may be at some point we may know at least some of the facts.
Hopefully not a prepper...but maybe another reason to prep. It seems that many residents near the home have been evacuated and will remain that way for a few days at least. I'm not saying that you should have a bugout bag ready in case one of your neighbors is a bomb building nutjob,(stopping to ponder my own neighbors) but it does go to show you that you can be evacuated from your home without notice for a variety of unforeseeable reasons.
Well, the fact that he had Food water and "survival gear" stored in his bunker tell me he probably was a prepper. Also many guns and thousands of rounds of ammo, which many many people on this forum claim to have. So yeah, sounds like your typical "prepper" or "survivalist" to me. There have been many cases like this one recently, like I said mainly down in the states. Where I was going with this is, at what point does doing something like obtaining a permit to build a bunker put you on a list that says "hey, this guy is planning to store a large amount of guns and ammo, we better label him as potential threat and keep our eyes on him". Will it always be legal for civilians to own bunkers, or will stories like this one eventually force them to take away that right as well?
Justabear you describe what preppers are about and then say thats in no way reflected in this news story, and you're right. Isnt that the scary part about it? the fact that the term "prepper" is not synomous with community, self reliance etc. but instead is thought of as a type of person who stores mass amounts of guns and ammo?
I mean, Im sure most of you have already heard about the recent list of words that you should not use online or risk being looked at as a potential terrorist threat. Will "prepper" or "survivalist" eventually be added to this list? Thats what my concern is.
Given the experiences of the society south of us... Waco... Ruby Ridge.... Militia's... those words are probably already on a watch list. I would guess they have "modifiers" as well that taken in conjunction with the primary word decide the level of concern. There are Preppers .... and then there are "preppers". The latter are those who assume or are labelled as such but in no way extol the virtues or meaning of us. Here is a link detailing an alternate view of the BENEFITS of preppers to society.

Amazing that it took them 34 years to arrest them...
Thank you JAB, great link. Beforeitsnews.com is a excellent site with interesting perspectives. Also there are lots of other fascinating articles on the site and links to even more. Well worth checking out.

Ah the wheels of justice turn ever so slowly.
The more I think about this case the more it bothers me. To me if looks like a duck, walks like a duck and quacks like a duck then it's a duck. Were these guys preppers? They had an elaborate underground bunker with power, stored food supplies, stored water, many guns and enough ammunition to start a small war. Looks like a duck to me. They were preppers.
Now that leads me to a couple of very unsettling questions why do two guys, even preppers, need twenty nine guns? Then there is the million dollar question. What in god's name were they doing with eighty bombs?
Bombs are not weapons for self defense they are weapons of indiscriminate destruction. What were they thinking and even more important what were they planning to do with them? If this was just one individual I could have understood that there were some mental health issues but it was not just one guy.
I joined this forum because I believe in prepping, being prepared for unforeseen emergencies, building resilient groups and communities that can help each other in times of crisis. I have personally met some of you and hope to meet many more. I would love to live close to other preppers. However can you imagine living close to these guys? Definitely something I would NOT want to do.
It goes to show that there are fanatical and very dangerous people out there. The police did everyone a favor by taking these individuals off the street. I hope the courts do their job and keep them incarcerated, protecting society for a long time to come.
I think the moral of this story is get to know your fellow preppers. They may not be as "like minded" as you think.
This is something I have been following as well, I think this family crossed the line, and I would no longer call them preppers, so much as I think of them as extreme survivalist with possable hertiable mental illness.

The unsettling part of this this article, is that Barrie is just down the road from CFB Borden, a military training base also a munitions storage depot. 😐
"We 'Prep.' to live after a downfall, Not just to survive."
Whats your point Ranger? Theres been huge Biker activity since the Inception of Barrie Ontario and it took alot of Man hours to put the M.....r F.......kers away. Barrie like Ontario in general is a breeding ground for these types some Military but most wannabe civilians who cant get thier rocks off any other way but to take everything to the extreme. That was the point of my Article about Gatekeepers. If most of you took the time to read what you write you would notice that you go in big circles around the topic of Survival and Prepping versus extremism. Look up the word extremism or extremist and then come back and tell me that most of the whack jobs on this site are just little innocent forest gnomes running around the timber with their AK 47s and the mantra has become...."were prepping for a disaster" Survival after the fact. WOW! How f...n errogant can you get. I served and Im staying to help out in my area when the SHTF. Im not running from problems looking for excuses for my insecurities, like escaping without aiding. Put that in your Cob pipe and smoke that weed for awhile!!
