WOW weve got some real scientists around here

I read that article about the Island sinking. It's printed in a TABLOID! I live on Vancouver Island and am active in my son's school All the newer schools are being built to much higher standards of earthquake preparedness. Glen Lake and Oak Bay if you want to google them. It takes a bit of searching on the web to confirm that. Also, the Jean de Fuca plate mentioned in the article is the fastest subducting plate on the plate. This fact is contrary to what is stated in the article. Which is a fancy way of saying that the article is lying. Anyone who posts nuasea like this is a moron. You're doing more harm than good. If you can't post valid informative items, post recipes for brownies and chocolate chip cookies. Hard to go wrong there.

And if you don't like me calling morons, morons what should call them? Stupid is as stupid does. Deal with reality.

The scary part of this post is learning you have reproduced, and finding out that some one is stupid enough to reproduce with you....May I also suggest ....SPELL CHECK BUTTON...to the right of the google bar....

Our costs for electricity, gas, vehicle fuel and food keep increasing. Loans from banks are harder to get and the unemployment rate is rising as well. Living in a small community (approx 7,400 people from our local shire which covers quite a large area) it becomes necessary to travel for over an hour to get to a major centre for employment (fuel costs for a week could be up to $130.00au). Unless you are multi-skilled and have certificates and diplomas to compete in the job market (& you may get lucky and get a job locally) you are forced to take any job you can get to survive.

Fuel is the major issue here at the moment because it just keeps going up regardless of the price per barrel and therefore everything we buy costs the retailers more due to freight costs continually rising so in turn it costs us more to restock our pantry.

Economic collapse to me means that people on lower incomes are not going to be able to afford fresh fruit, vegetables and decent cuts of meat/fish unless they are growing their own (once again if you have poor soil like we do here, you have to build up raised garden beds so that you can grow some food). Not eating properly will have an impact on the health of people and will increase the use of medicines. If someone cannot afford to eat properly then they won't be able to pay for doctors visits & medicine, or pay their rent/mortgage, or be able to afford power for lighting, heating, cooking etc. If we end up in a Depression type scenario there are a lot of people who (apart from not taking notice of what is happening around the world) don't know how to garden, will not forage for wild edibles, won't know how to make their own heating/cooking devices and these are the people who may resort to stealing or violence to get what they need.

Good post Susannah.

If I remember correctly 30% of the US was rural. These were people who could grow their own food. Today it is about 3%. Our cities are full of people who are dependant on these 3%. A collapse of the dollar will bring chaos to the farmers who may not be able to buy seeds, or to buy fuel for the machinery. You can just imagine the impact in the city.
They say have a three day supply of food in all our cities but I'm sure that doesn't take into consideration panic buying. Just normal shopping. In a collapse people won't be shopping normally while the value of their dollar plummets by the hour. We're banking on a three day grace period to bug out put the more I read the less optomistic I am about that.
Ben Bernake is an economics Professor. Or rather was. His expertise was the Great Depression. I think he's being paid very well to keep us in one while we're stripped of everything of value. That is why interest rates are low.

I've got nowhere to bug out to, and having an elderly & disabled parent to care for doesn't make things any easier. There are farms all around this area (and the farmers are the ones with the firearms). The only reason I will look at bugging out will be bushfire (and we'll be leaving very early to a safe area to wait it out) - otherwise I'm staying put and will barter from farmers for meat if/when the opportunity arises. I do need to come up with a means of catching & killing beasties for the dogs & cats to eat. Does anyone know about myxomatosis & calicivirus - are rabbits with these diseases Ok for dogs to eat?

Then prepare to "bug-in" Think about how to make your home look like it's been looted or it's not a target. Co-ordinate with other nieghbors who may think like you. If they don't then find out what they may need to barter. Plan ahead to try to form a little mini-community around where you live. Perhaps they also have shut-ins and moving all the shut-ins to a common location is better short term. You have lots of options Susannah.

Thanks Mokonotora, sound info there and yes, I have been trying to work with the neighbours...so far, so good...they like some fresh veggies & fruit every now and then so it's been OK (mostly elderly in my immediate area). House is surrounded on three sides by corrugated iron fences (which is sharp, rusty and slightly jagged on top) and three small windows out the front which have nails driven into the frames to allow air flow but no "people flow" through them. Currently working on self defence issues.....and the house already looks neglected!

Thanks for the info Ranger2012...I've been looking into the option of breeding my own meat rabbits, but they'll probably end up with names and so I'll have to think very seriously about the meat issue!

Susannah, you are such a girl, but I'm sure if the time comes between the hunger of your dogs and the rabbits...I'm sure the dogs will win. Get a neighbor to do it for you.

LMAO..yeah, I know! Working on that too - I did actually talk to an older guy here in town who hunts wild rabbits (we got talking cos he has a gorgeous german shepherd puppy who goes everywhere with him). He's doing it tough at the moment and I asked him what he fed his dog on...he hunts wild rabbit!......so, I asked him if he would be able to supply me with some wild rabbits and I'd give him some extra cash and he's happy to do that. (What a gentleman..he's going to skin and gut them for me too) Yay!

you need to get him to show you how do to it as well. You might not like it, but knowledge is power and he might not always be around. Shame to spoil the meat and the rabbits life on improper game prep.
just for your info

WildE - yep, I know you're right - I'm bracing myself! I know I will eventually have to do it (and I'm putting it off cos I know I'm gonna do the usual girl thing if it's my own rabbits) so I'll ask him. I have the technical knowledge but not the practical and if/when I have to do it for survival, I don't want to mess it up and spoil the meat. eeeew!

Just collected a dozen nice clean rabbit bodies (all gutted and skinned) and it only cost me a bottle of whisky! Also I had my first (and last) lesson in gutting and skinning a rabbit! The guy was nice enough when I asked him if he would show me how it's done...so, he showed me ...I turned a bit green....but, I was committed to learning, so then I tried...at least one of us had a bloody good laugh! Not doing any more unless we're starving...Sorry..it was gross! Next step is to take the dogs out bush and see if they can catch their own rabbits! I'll stick to vegetables and fruit & barter for meat when SHTF!
