Ok I give up. I was trying to find the article that I read on how people dealt with the year there was no summer. All I can remember now was a lot of people starved to deal in Ontario. It got so bad that people were boiling beech leaves for "soup". They also blood let what animals they managed to keep alive and mix it with oats to stay alive. With all of the volcanoes "going off" lately, it got me wondering how long before this happens again.

Wow. I wonder how we would handle that situation now, nearly 200 years later. Interesting.

Ya. I was wondering if this year was going to be like that.....then boom, Too hot to work outside. It brings up a subject I would like all your advice about. If an extreme weather event was to wipe out the years crop, what would be your plant choices for a quick growing replacement crop to help avoid winter starvation.

"Yum. Dehydrated lettuce for both breakfast AND dinner? What a treat. Thanks Mom..."

Cernunnos5, I think radishes grown fairly quickly. Lettuces and kales would be good. Peas like the cooler weather, so if it didn't warm up, then I would plant more of those to grow as a late summer/fall crop. This is just of the top of my head. I would have to research it for sure.

Mumm's@sprouting.com.(Saskatchewan)You can get a 55lb bag of mixed sprouting seeds that will supply all the nutrition you will need including protien for a little over $300.00.A cupful a day would give you 2 full liter jars in 3 days that would feed a family every day for months.I got one for y2k and enjoyed it for a couple of years after at a few meals a week instead of salad.Put it in the sun the last day and you will have chlorophyll too.

Something like the events that triggered the "year without a summer" could very well happen again. I don't think that the results on the western world would be any where near as severe as in 1816. For a little historical perspective let's take a look at the year 1816.

Jan 12th - France decrees Bonaparte family excluded from the country forever
Jan 22nd - Lord Byron completes "Parisina" & "Siege of Corinth"
Feb 13th - -14] Teatro San Carlo in Naples destroyed by fire
Feb 20th - Rossini's opera "Barber of Seville" premieres in Rome
Feb 27th - Dutch regain Suriname
Mar 6th - Jews are expelled from Free city of Lubeck Germany
Mar 20th - US Supreme Court affirms its right to review state court decisions
Apr 9th - African Methodist Episcopal Church organizes (Phila)
Apr 10th - 2nd Bank of US chartered
May 5th - American Bible Society organized (NY)
May 10th - English steamship "Defiance" arrives at Rotterdam harbor
May 11th - American Bible Society forms (NY)
Jun 6th - 10" snowfall in New England, "year without a summer" (Mount Tambora)
Jun 11th - Gas Light Co of Baltimore founded
Jun 19th - Battle of Seven Oaks between North West Company and Hudson's Bay Company, near Winnipeg, Manitoba, Canada.
Jul 1st - Fr frigate Medusa wrecked; basis of Géricault's "Raft of the Medusa"
Jul 3rd - French frigate "Medusa" runs aground off Cap Blanc. Gross incompetence kills 150 in calm seas
Jul 8th - Frost in Waltham, MA
Jul 9th - Argentina declares independence from Spain
Jul 19th - Survivors of French frigate Medusa rescued off Senegal after 17 days
Jul 27th - US troops destroy Ft Apalachicola, a Seminole fort, to punish Indians for harboring runaway slaves
Aug 8th - Bavarian joins Saint Alliance
Aug 14th - Great Britain annexes Tristan da Cunha
Aug 19th - Java again in Dutch hands
Aug 24th - The Treaty of St. Louis is signed in St. Louis, Missouri.
Aug 27th - Lord Exmouth bombs Algiers, a refuge for Barbary pirates
Sep 5th - Louis XVIII has to dissolve the Chambre introuvable ("Unobtainable Chamber").
Oct 7th - 1st double decked steamboat, Washington, arrives in New Orleans
Oct 21st - The Penang Free School is founded in George Town, Penang, Malaysia, by the Rev Hutchings. It is the oldest English-language school in Southeast Asia.
Nov 19th - Warsaw University is established.
Dec 2nd - 1st savings bank in US opens (Philadelphia Savings Fund Society)
Dec 4th - James Monroe (VA), elected 5th pres, defeating Federalist Rufus King
Dec 10th - Dutch regain Sumatra
Dec 11th - Citizens of Geneva thwarted Savoyard invaders
Dec 11th - Indiana becomes 19th state
Dec 13th - Patent for a dry dock issued to John Adamson, Boston
Dec 28th - American Colonization Society organizes
Dec 30th - The Treaty of St. Louis is proclaimed.

1816 was a time when steam powered ships sailed the seas. The US mail had only just started to travel in steam powered water craft (1813) and communications were dreadfully slow. The whales of the world were being exterminated for lamp oil and this practice would not end until the introduction of kerosene as a viable alternate some fifty years later. Were we to experience another "year without a summer" the prices of our groceries would increase.........

I have a 50-lb bag of green lentils in my basement for that purpose. I don't like other sprouts but lentils I don't mind. I used to sprout them to make peanut butter lentil sprout sandwiches. They're very good! 😀
