i will PVR it and watch after.

any show that gives possible insight to prepping tools i do enjoy.

as for prepping for this possibility, yes, as well as many others. after what happened in quebec. it would be silly not to prep for it.

It's past my bedtime but I'm going to watch it anyway.

seems there is also a uk version of this just called blackout.

"Blackout" -- Feature-length 'What-If' docu-drama exploring the effects of a devastating cyber-attack
on Britain's national electricity grid

Based on expert advice and meticulous research, Blackout combines real user-generated footage
alongside fictional scenes, CCTV archive and news reports to build a terrifyingly realistic account of
Britain being plunged into darkness

The film plots the days following a nationwide power cut, as experienced by a cast of ordinary
characters struggling to feed and protect themselves and their families. These eyewitness accounts
reveal the disastrous impact of a prolonged blackout on hospitals, law and order, transport, and our
food and water supplies

The programme casts members of the public from user-generated footage, weaving real-life archive
with scripted drama to tell the story of how Britain could descend into chaos and anarchy without power

Premiere: September 09, 2013
Classification: Scripted
Genre: Docu-Drama
Network: Channel 4 (United Kingdom)

Hello Folks,
I am new to this forum/blog and was just wondering who is going to watch American Blackout on National Geographic tonight 9PM EST ?

I watched this last night while recording the Walking Dead's latest episode. It was good. For the most part, it was a realistic interpretation of what would actually occur during a blackout. I did feel that the producers assumed people would go frantic much sooner though. Day 5 as per the show feels more like day 15 to me. In any event it was entertaining to see how absolutely clueless and oblivious people where their own well-being is concerned. The 'happy' ending was nice, however, not likely. It was great that they had a prepper perspective in there as well. He should have dropped off his daughters boyfriend somewhere instead of dragging him along in my opinion. The prepper father, while a little gun-ho, did have the proper mindset where survival was concerned.

B+. Recommend.

also what are your opinions on shows like this?

They're great. There's always something to be picked-up and learned no matter how delusional some preppers are or how corny the acting is.

A real prepper embraces and works towards prepping in all respects where disasters are concerned. Most preppers fail at this as they focus on a single or subset of events (I.E. blackouts or viral pandemics or peak oil). I don't have crystal ball and neither does anyone else on the planet that has the power to tell the future. This means that because we don't know what is going to happen we should prepare for everything with emphasis or focus on what is likely to occur - a purely subjective opinion. In short, I prepare for everything with a personal focus on blackouts, EMP's and viral pandemics. This is because I feel something like this is more likely to occur rather then an invasion by Russians (which some 'crazy' preppers exclusively base their preps on). Long term? Yes.

OMG...not November 13th!
Why, that's the day that Gridex 2 is scheduled to take place!
You know, the day the government is supposed to turn the lights out all over North America and drag us all into FEMA death camps!
Watch You Tube closely folks...someone is bound to make this the next doomsday date...

I just went to set my PVR to record it, but it does not have any programming that far in advance.
This must mean that they know what's going to happen!
Are they planning something?
Are they watching me right now...tracking my keystrokes?
I've said too much already...I will surely be killed by midnight tonight!

I went to bed early, but then again, I was awake at 2 a.m. and watched it!
I thought that American Blackout was somewhat over-inflated - 5 days into the show's blackout, there was mayhem. During the real-life '98 Ice Storm in Eastern Ontario and West Quebec, the power was out for up to 4 weeks (2 weeks for us) in January....... there was no panic or gun-toting maniacs trying to steal our food or firewood -however, some generators were stolen from some businesses 🙁 .
American Blackout was a bit of an exaggeration in my opinion.
But I still liked it...... 😉

It is "American" blackout, not Canadian Blackout. 😉 We're a little less paranoid and trigger happy up here.

I must say the DH and I had some great conversation about this show. I have to agree that being in Canada seems to make a difference. Look at Hurricane Sandy and some of the more panicy behavior seen then vs the Ice Storm and you can see some real life differences right there.

It basically reinforced that we are on the right path in our prepping, even if you just look at the basics. Basic Prepardness is everyone's civic responsibility and we're (not this group, but the greater "we"), appear to have forgotten that. It's not the government's job to take care of our every need 24 x 7.

While I agree with the Hollywood factor, especially with how long it took for the chaos to start, I wonder if this will hopefully serve as a warning for everyone. Now the question is whether the general public will do anything with this insight the show provided? 😕

If life hands you lemons, be sure you have a battery backed up juicer to make some good ol' fashioned lemonade! 😉

Personal Night Vision Goggles (NVG) are prohivitably expensive for most people, but are worth it if you want to have the full range of options in the hours of darkness.

With over 40 years of use, the technology is proven. They've become smaller, lighter, cheaper and more effective.

Expect to pay between $2000 and $5000 to own a good monocular or binocular set. As passive devices, light intensifiers will not announce your presence while you observe the night (you won't scare off nocturnal game or predators). Other advantages over artificial light are that you can use them with magnifying optics, observing far greater distance and wider field of view than artificial light can reveal.

When bad men combine, the good must associate; else they will fail, one by one, an unpitied sacrifice in a contemptible struggle.

I very much enjoyed this show. I also agree that it may have plunged into chaos quite soon but one does not really know how the average human can stay 'human' when one is denied water and food.

i agree with prepher, the show while good, had things happen way to quick . i think the scenarios they showed would eventually happen just over a longer period of time, more like 2-3 months.
