So I know nothing about this, but since my family is spread out I have thought a ham radios for all would be excellent. When I googled there was a such a massive amount of (often inconsistent) info it was baffling. So I'll ask you guys; What is the cheapest RELIABLE ham radio to operate? What are the best sources of information about getting started? Thanks

Hey, gang.

Just a quick heads up about the big Ali express sale next week. If you're looking for a cheap, effective HAM radio capable transceiver, prices on 11 November will be slashed. You can pick up a BAOFENG UV5R for $39, and get the discount of another 15%.

Free shipping makes this an incredible deal. You'll want to get optional antennas and batteries too. Many preppers have these in their standby kits, because the little radios do what they claim. Good for monitoring public FM, HAM, GMRS and MURS. aliexpress(dot)com is their site.
