Howdy Folks,

I am interested in exploring the Churchill River. I plan to takeout just North of La Ronge.

What, in your opinion, is the best location to start the trip??? I hope to have about 14 - 18 days available to be on the water. My craft will be a 2 man Folbot kayak.

I am looking at maybe next summer or the next at the latest. Any firsthand intel would be great. Any areas to avoid?? Any areas to not miss/must see?? Best month to travel?? July?? August?? Sept??

Mountainman.

I have canoed west of laronge a couple times. The spring or fall I would say is the best time less bugs more fish.

ba122walkeer,

Were you on the Churchill River or on one of the hundreds of lakes West of La Ronge??

Thanks for your reply.

It was the Churchhill we flew out of Misinippi about 1hr drive north of LaRonge the planes were very cool Otters. We landed on big bear island lake and canoed back to otter rapids. We ran 3 sets of rapids and carried the stuff around 4 more.

ba122walkeer,

Sounds like an awesome trip. Would you do it again?? Would you paddle more of the Churchill??

I do not think I will be able to fly to my put in, most likely have to drive then have the vehicle moved to the take out.

Thanks again.

Mountainman.

I would do it again for sure. It was a five day paddle. I remember a map near the otter rapids that show various canoe routes. I would reccomend a guide or some one you has been there before, for the first trip there are many islands and lakes it would be easy to get lost. I is not like the north Sk or the Athabasca. just go with the flow. I'm planning a trip next spring with two other couples east of otter rapids next year.

ba122walkeer,

The fact you are willing to do the trip again says a lot about the country and the waterway.

If and when I finally figure out how I am going to get my trip, I will ensure I have done my homework and have a proper route card and maps. I realize there is a lot of bush and few people on the Churchill. That is part of the attraction.

Best of luck on your next float!

Mountainman.
