2019-NCoV – A further discussion

Well it was bound to happen! No, I’m not referring to a pandemic level virus, but rather the plethora of preparedness bloggers and You Tubers (especially You Tubers) spewing absolute garbage regarding the 2019-NCoV virus. We now see almost everyone in the preparedness community arguing about what masks to use, what information is reliable, and believe it or not, how to snort massive amounts of powdered vitamin C to cure the disease! Let’s get real here for a bit…

The first thing you have to remember when researching pandemic preparedness is that sensationalism sells! Don’t get sucked in. I’ve seen YouTubers with nearly 150K subscribers give some of the worst advice I’ve heard in regards to setting up a containment/quarantine room in your home. Be sure to vet your research sources. With today’s internet, it would be difficult to not use search engines for research. The problem with the internet is that there are no checks and balances. Literally anyone can put anything they want online. Rely on verifiable sources whenever possible.

Try not to get caught up in the hype. Is there really anything you can do about a Chinese scientist stealing a virus from a Canadian lab? Are you able to halt the sale of wild bat soup in China? Absolutely not! Ignore those that ramble on about how this virus may or may not have been introduced into society and look for information on how to protect yourself and your loved ones.

Keep in mind that no matter how this one ends, it isn’t the first pandemic nor the last. You may not be affected by 2019-NCoV, but the next one might end up in your town or city. Learn from what is going on and prepare yourself for the next one.
