"Mount Baker: The Active Volcano In Our Backyard"
There are actually 5 active volcanoes in the State of Washington, your neighbor to your south. Mount St. Helens erupted in only 1980 here in WA, affecting the whole region. It was the most deadly and economically destructive volcanic eruption in the history of the United States, killing 57 people and destroying 200 houses, 47 bridges, 15 miles of railways and 185 miles of highway. The strato-volcanic blast deposited ash across 11 states and 5 Canadian provinces. Mount Baker, like Mount St. Helens, is also a stratovolcano, and much closer than Mount St. Helens. Not paranoia. Fact.
The non-profit Mount Baker Volcano Research Center (MBVRC) director, volcanologist and author Dave Tucker will be giving us a geological history presentation on "Mount Baker: The Active Volcano In Our Backyard" (also a stratovolcano, in Whatcom County), as well as answering later questions about our Cascadia Subduction Zone that carries real risks of earthquake and tsunami danger to our coastal region. (See our coastal fault line and the recent New Yorker article "The Really Big One", on our Cascadia Subduction Zone). Dave's is an hour long presentation, and seating will be limited to 80.
Additionally, the Whatcom County Preppers (a non-profit, strictly non-political emergency preparedness educational organization serving the public) will discuss S.W.O.T. emergency preparedness evaluations, and putting together efficient emergency evacuation bags as suggested by the American Red Cross, FEMA and other responders.
We are advertising this widely---as a multi-purpose event to the public, along with invitations to selected press. Free to the public. Free food and drinks will also be made available, provided by local area businesses. Take advantage of this free educational opportunity!
Seating is limited, so if you wish to attend, please contact Tina at: whatcomcountypreppers@yahoo.com to reserve seats for this Sunday!
