hey duffman im not from the island but i'd bet that there are a few dollarama dollar stores on the island. At a $1.25 you cant beat the price,ok quality may not be the best, but for a prepper on a budget, these stores help out alot. Im not rich and i find alot of good preps at dollar stores. my two cents....
thanks but if anyone on the island can help with adding stuff it could help anyone starting out if we can all make a sortof list list i stopped at wholesale and got 2 waterproof match containers and a folding shovel with saw built in to the handle and a compass for only 35 dollars today

I'm personally in a very delicate financial situation, so I know exactly what you're trying to accomplish and appreciate it. I've been haunting the local Dollar store/dollarama/buck or two. I've found quite a few things, including aluminum cooking pans, like pie pans. Now first off, I know you'd think "But what can we do with that in a bug-out?" Lots. Ever try building a fire on wet ground, with wet supplies? Yeah, doesn't work. Take my word for it. So, it serves as a separation between dry and wet. Second, if you're being pursued, the last thing you want is for traces of a fire to be left behind. Although in that case it obviously wouldn't be the best for quickly starting a fire, it's certainly useful for dousing, and taking the pit with you.
Also, my local dollar stores have: Camping Showers (reservoirs for gravity feed showers), Grilling pokers for campfire cooking of Hamburgers, hot dogs, marshmallows, etc.... Emergency blankets, Compasses both orienteering and pocket styles, waterproof pouches in various sizes, sharpening stones for blades, wire for snares, water purification tablets, fire starters (sticks of some sort of highly flammable substances), lighters, survival compass/whistle combinations, and a bunch of other useful items.
I tend to also watch for sales at the local "Adventure Shop" which specializes in outdoorsy goods from Kayaks, to pocket knives. I'm working at a pizza shop in the same mall, so it's a simple matter of walking over there for the 5 mins before work starts lol.
Well, hope I've been of assistance.

Good find. I've been tempted to get one myself, but I already have a hatchet, and more knives than I can keep track of. I like that one though.

Speaking of tools. I am crazy for cutlery. If you gotta bugout to the bush, the Trailblazer take down buck saw is a super tool. Light weight, collapses into its own tube and saws like crazy. Because of its design it can also be used by a person on each end and then you can really buck up some firewood. And the price is cheap for what it is. There is a newer version out called the Sawvivor by the same company that is really gaining popularity. I like this one because I can buy replacement blades locally.

hey guys the only thing with this hatchet is its small like 10 inch in size and theres amagnet inside the handle and on the knife so when you slide the knife in it doesnt come out plus has a clip to hold the knife to as a back up and Zzulu i bought a shovel saw combo last weekend and the only thing i hate about it was the saw is screwed into the handle i'll add a picture of it so you can see it didnt seem like it would work well
any other suggestions could help to what about packs and water treatment or whats everyone opinion on guns and stuff

Well for getting things cheap try the goodwill, sally ann, used stores etc. The thing with these stores you have to visit often, if you only visit once and while sometimes you can score big. you chances increase the more you go as their stock is always changing. so if you can manage once a week or twice the better
Simple, cheap and lite water filter. Take charcoal from a fire, but it into a bandana and pound it into dust. Take a plastic bottle (pop bottle type) cut the bottom off and place the bandana with the charcoal dust into it pour water through into another container. Another idea, but this one requires time and a sunny day, fill a bottle with water, tie a cord around the neck and spin it for a couple of minutes to separate any debris out, pour the water through a filter (coffee or milk type) into another clear container with a lid and then leave it in the sun for about hours. Natural light will kill any bacteria. This method is used in places in Africa but as I said it requires direct sun light and will not work on a typical cloudy BC day.

Alot of what people think they need comes from commercial advertising. Go to your local library and see if they have a copy of NORTHERN BUSH CRAFT by Mos L. Kochanski. Don't bother to try to find a copy as it is out of print and the only ones I have see are a ridiculous amount of money. I did find a copy online but it took a lot of doing.
The book is written for Northern Canada and has nearly everything you could need to know to survive and thrive if you needed to. The tools he recommends the most are nothing more than a good axe, knife and maybe some matches. Give it a read, something everyone should do. Just my 2 cents. (Opps, no more pennies so gotta be 2 nickels now 😉 )
A couple of web sites some good info can be obtained from are project gutenberg ( http://www.gutenberg.org/ ) and internet archives ( http://archive.org/index.php ). The available books may be old but in a disaster scenario it can be invaluable as it does not rely on modern technology of any kind.
