New update from http://www.spaceweather.com/ .

Only an M class, probably a "glancing blow".

We are on a watch for a g2 (moderate) storm on Sept.3.
Here is the description of a g2 event...

Power systems: high-latitude power systems may experience voltage alarms, long-duration storms may cause transformer damage.

Spacecraft operations: corrective actions to orientation may be required by ground control; possible changes in drag affect orbit predictions.

Other systems: HF radio propagation can fade at higher latitudes, and aurora has been seen as low as New York and Idaho (typically 55° geomagnetic lat.)**.

Didn't you Canadians have a solar flare take out half your grid network some where around the 90's or so?
If that's right how long did it take them to get their act back together and get it sorted and back to normal?

I'm old, tired and crotchety - what's your excuse???

Ya, I remember that one...no real damage to the grid, just some tripped safeties and stuff.
Everything was back to normal in about 6 hours.
When the power company blamed solar flares, I thought that they must think we are retarded or something...
Now I know better!
