My guys are watching dirty jobs and they are covering the Chicago botanic seed bank right now.
Interesting that in the description for the show it is called "Doomsday Seed Banker" and how it is to be used in case of a catastrophic event.
Just sharing the info in case you all get a chance to watch it.
Wish I had seen this, will have to go see if they posted it online.
Interesting note: Most of us, if not all have heard of Norway's big seed vault... they have steadily collecting seeds from around the globe since 1984 or so.
2 weeks back I was researching Canadian seed companies to buy from this year and remembered the big MacKenzie seeds factory in Manitoba and decided to look them up... only to discover that the company was purchased by a Norwegian company back around 2003-2004!
(Nothing against the seed plant what-so-ever, but bought mine locally off an organic farmer)
Figure most of you know about this already but just in case, if you are looking for local seeds and small producers in your area, you can check the site for a seedy saturday event in your area. Great to have it all in one place but even better that you can network with the local growers an meet folks face to face for questions etc.
