In a pinch a car spring will make a good knife. When I was younger we used to start with a car spring and cut and grind it down to a nice sized blade then throw on a good handle. It worked great for splitting wood/kindling and other jobs around the camp.

Excellent point. Re-using leaf springs to make knife blades, is the ultimate recycling! I had one that had a slight curve near the end, and was most excellent at peeling cedar poles of their bark.
