Covid-19 – An Evolving Situation.

When respected members of the government start to warn about a possible outbreak here in Canada, it’s past the point where we need to start paying attention.

Canada’s Chief Public Health Officer Theresa Tam is now telling reporters that this very well could become a serious issue. “These signs are concerning, and they mean that the window of opportunity for containment … for stopping the global spread of the virus, is closing,”

Not only is the window for containment closing, but the window to become prepared as preppers is also narrowing. We’ve all heard about or even witnessed a shortage of PPE items such as N95 masks and hand sanitizer. If this virus gets a hold of the Canadian public, I suspect that these items will be next to impossible to procure. Not only will demand skyrocket, but the Canadian distribution system is being hampered by rail disruptions, which lowers supply. High demand with low supply creates issues.

Here are a few things we’ve learned over the past week or so…

  • The Covid-19 incubation period is now considered as long as 27 days.
  • Previously cleared patients are now testing positive again.
  • Surface survivability could be well over a week. (I have been told by medical professionals who monitor the situation closely that studies indicate it is 9 days.)

With outbreaks appearing in countries previously considered low risk such as Italy, a 27 day incubation period has to raise the question of how many potentially infected people have come into the country? Iran also recently experienced a surge in cases, and we have seen the consequences here with a traveler from Iran passing through Montreal on her way to Vancouver.

5 days ago, the first batch of quarantined patients were set to be released after only 14 days of isolation. As we now know, these patients may well still develop symptoms. I also have to make a note that I could not find any indication that these patients were actually tested for the virus or just monitored for symptoms.

Ignoring the evil MSM news can be a hindrance to many preppers…there, I said it! Get serious and watch the frigging news people, you would be surprised at what information you can gleam from it. Let’s have a look shall we?

Here is a report from the CBC, please have a look and read it from beginning to end.

Let’s look at one particular line from that report…

” Tam said that the goal now is to slow the spread of the virus, adding it’s difficult to stop its spread because more countries are reporting people with no or mild symptoms. “

So why is the goal now to slow the spread of the virus? Simply put, Canada wants to hold back the Covid-19 virus until the flu season passes. Dealing with a seasonal flu while trying to deal with a more serious viral outbreak which shares many symptoms with the flu would be a nightmare. To me, this indicates that regardless of what officials are saying outright, an outbreak in Canada is at the very least, somewhat anticipated, it’s just a matter of when, not if at this point. The Ottawa Citizen also quotes Tam as saying “We are trying to push past winter respiratory season. That will help a lot.”

The window to contain the virus may be closing soon, and our window to prepare for it is also. I recommend that all preppers prepare their plan, be that sheltering in place or bugging out to a less populated area. Gather supplies and learn how to use them properly. Decide what event will trigger your plan to be executed, perhaps a transmitted case in your county, or other predefined area. Whatever you decide to do, now is the time to make those decisions.
