Covid-19 : Our Bug In Day 52

When the WHO declared the global pandemic, I knew right away that things were going to get ugly. As of March 13th 2020, I have decided that my family needs to go into a bug in situation. This was always the plan, the proverbial trigger has been pulled! Here is a daily update on what we face.

Day 52 –

For the most part, it’s a nasty cold rainy day. Pretty much everything we did today was just day to day stuff. Since there were no real outdoor projects, I took most of the day to rest my back and do some work on the blog. Aside from the posts you all see, there is actually quite a bit of maintenance, upgrading, researching of new software, etc.

In terms of government regulations, things are changing so fast these days that it’s hard to keep up on what we are and are not allowed to do. Here in Quebec, elementary schools will be opening up on May 11th, with the exception of Montreal. Sending your kids back to school is optional and only with the consent of BOTH parents (obviously only in cases where both parents are involved).

Whatever seedlings actually came up on the first planting and survived at least a week are now growing well. Second and third plantings are still struggling despite all that we have done. Thankfully, garden centers are open now, so we can go get what we didn’t have success with.

We continue to plan for the immediate future. Although this first wave seems to have been a bust, we are still seeing shortages in grocery stores. We expect that if a second wave hits the way we expect it, these shortages will have more of an impact and we will see even more basics in short supply.

It is interesting to talk with store clerks though. While many people are blaming hoarders for the shortages, we have learned that orders are simply not making their way to the stores. One store last week told me that they only received two cases from their order of toilet paper. Pay attention folks…the problem is in the supply chain, not because of hoarders!
