Covid-19 : Our Bug In Days 29 & 30

When the WHO declared the global pandemic, I knew right away that things were going to get ugly. As of March 13th 2020, I have decided that my family needs to go into a bug in situation. This was always the plan, the proverbial trigger has been pulled! Here is a daily update on what we face.

We took the day off on Easter Sunday to spend time together as a family. This is a two day update.

Day 29 (Saturday April 11th) –

Time for another supply run to the grocery stores. Social distancing and extensive cleaning protocols are being observed very well in our “safe stores”. We continue to stock up on meat, poultry, and fish. We are purchasing two to three times what we consume in a week so that stockpiles grow. Paper products are curiously low or completely absent from shelves. Toilet paper, kleenex, even napkins. Given that there are limits placed on these products, this leads me to believe there is a break in the supply chain. Since this break seems to be affecting paper products only, I suspect it’s a temporary situation owing to a catch up phase in the industry. Time will tell.

Seedlings continue to suffer. We’ll make a few adjustments to the lighting, but I fear that we’ll have to replant most of what we have. Given that we were going to plant more seedlings in a couple of days anyways, we’ll check them out and decide then. Most likely we will start from scratch with everything.

Day 30 (Sunday, April 12th) –

A more or less quiet day with family. Some food and family time that was well needed. Of course, there are still things to get done though. With more rain in the forecast, we split and stacked some more firewood into the mudroom. We sat down to figure out how we were doing on supplies with an emphasis on meat products. Our supply runs are helping add to the stockpiles and we already have a good supply of alternatives such as beans and lentils.

The rain forecast is quite welcome at this point. Sure, it makes a muddy mess in the yard, but that snowpack can’t melt fast enough. We have identified a few small trees to be cut out and a lot of spruce that needs to be trimmed up. We have gardens to dig, raised beds to build, and I’m itching to be able to sling up a ham radio antenna into the trees behind the house. Come on spring!
