Covid-19 – The SHTF Event That Might Not Be.

Were you expecting zombies? Perhaps you thought we would see people dropping dead in the streets, hospitals completely over run, crematoriums running 24/7?

So far, we haven’t seen any of the above here in Canada. Neither have we seen anyone being welded into their apartment buildings, the WHO has not been going house to house removing victims, and the military is not patrolling the streets.

In fact, many preppers thought this was going to be “the big one”, the event they have been preparing for for so long. In the end, it was the global SHTF event that wasn’t. At least so far.

Across the country, different provinces have reacted to varying degrees, depending on the severity of the situation. Now, the different provinces are lifting restrictions at their own pace, also depending on the severity of the situation. It’s not hard to imagine why many Canadians think it’s nearing the end, and/or was completely overblown from the get go.

The roving gangs of marauders never materialized. The golden hoard, while annoying to some regions, was underwhelming at best and limited to a few individuals and families heading to cottage country. There was no mass migration from cities to rural areas. The WROL scenario many imagined was more of an EROL (excessive rule of law) that in all honesty, derailed any WROL possibility.

Now here we sit, as a country, wondering what’s next. Will this be the beginning of the end? Are we just seeing the eye of the storm and about to get hit by a second wave? Some claim yes, some say no. In the end, no one knows for certain and only time will tell.

For now, life will no longer be normal. We will be encouraged (and in some cases forced) to wear masks in public. We will have to remember the 2 meter rule when meeting friends and neighbors. We will have to keep up situational awareness while going about our daily lives. We will also have to keep an ear to the ground for a while.

At this point in time, it’s difficult to figure out if we have past the peak, or are just waiting for the next wave. Even if there is no second wave, there are plenty of things to prepare for, including the next worldwide pandemic that comes our way. You had better believe that this was not the first time this has happened, and certainly won’t be the last.
