Quite a while ago Tazweiss had suggested to me the concern of EMPs, whether natural or man-made.
Imagine, that right this second an EMP struck.
Every unprotected piece of electronics and the power grid suddenly gone. Cars slowly rolling to a stop. And all the rest.
Now if you were standing there in the eerie silence, what advice would you give your self 24 hours earlier? What would you tell yourself to do and get finished?
Build that Faraday cage and stash everything inside?
Buy some old junker car that has no solid state electronics?
Run to the grocery store and load up on food? But what kind?
Specifically, if you knew for certain that you only had 24 hours to get ready, what would you do and who would you tell?

I was thinking about the question then I re-read your posting an realized You already posted my answer. 🙂 I might add I would max out all my credit cards & credit buying supplies but also gold & silver jewellry.
Problem is that nobody knows the future, so the question is mute.
Suppose you have a flood tomorrow. What would you have done 24 hours prior? See what I mean? Floods are more prevalent than EMP or a CME but yet I doubt anyone here has sandbags lined up to their rooftops.
Okay Grav, just for you. (You never rolled dice as a kid did you;) )
A good friend, relative (whatever) who works in Intelligence calls you and says that there is an enormously high chance that there will be an event in about 24 hours. He/she or it, says that 'they don't think it can be stopped or avoided.
What would you do?
Well we would post it on this site of course in the Disaster Alert forum! That way everyone who checks this site regularly would also have a heads up.
A couple of stats for the EMP sceptics. First, we are required by law to have PL&PD insurances on our vehicles but how many also have collision insurance? How many among us think that it is prudant to have fire coverage on your home? Remember those two questions after the stats.
According to the Insurance Bureau of Canada, there is a 1 in 1200 chance that you will have a housefire within the next year. According to the Insurance Bureau of Canada, there is a 1 in 250 chance that you will be involved in an auto accident in the next year. According to NASA, the JPL and the Russian Academy of Science, there is a 12% chance of a Carrington level solar flare and EMP in the next year. Now, do the math.
A Carrington level solar flare and EMP is 144 times more likely to happen than you having a housefire in the next year.
A Carrington level solar flare and EMP is 30 times more likely to happen than for you to get in an auto accident in the next year.
Do you have insurance for that event? :geek: :geek:

Most people don't understand their life has gotten worse ALREADY, regardless of a warning. They wouldnt comprehend a warning that things may be dire. They might understand after multiple days of no food and water, or an instant before they blow their brains out, otherwise, they are going to act with the group happy to believe what they are told to believe.
They will ignore anything that lowers their dopamine levels.
What would I do? Who cares. No one listens when I warn them now.
Even for the ones who half listen ...they would be too worried about buying the newest latest and greatest plastic water filter to care.

Well, I had the car accident less than a year ago, so I guess that means my odds are pretty crappy! This is why I don't gamble.
Some sobering stats Taz. Definitely food for thought.
If you are seriously concerned about solar flares (what you called "natural" EMP's), you should subscribe to some space weather bulletins. I subscribed to the ips.gov.au but more because its a great predictor of northern lights.
It seems most C and M class flares take a few days to get to earth, although I've read the big X class flares can travel the distance in hours, especially if there are back to back events. But even then not every flare hits the earth. Apparently the Carrington event of fame from the 1800s was a couple back to back X class flares ( or something like that), where the first cleared away all the buffering particle that orbit our little rock here.
That's about the best you can do for prediction. I don't think anyone could ever predict a 'human caused event'.
But yeah, the question is pretty moot. You should instead ask if people are actually preparing for any EMP events, and if so, what do they do. We don't really need to deal with hypotheticals because, well, they are hypothetical. I should probably be more concerned about it, but it's a ways down on my priorities list. I guess I'm preparing for an EMP the same way I'm preparing for a power outage. Mainly, trying not to freeze in the middle of winter.
Nice question! The first thing that came to mind was bicycles. Mine was stolen last year and my husbands has been sitting in a friends garage for a while. Ideally I'd be getting out of town, so bikes and trailers, reinforced and in good condition would be fantastic! Also, a little more defense capabilities to help us get out safe.i would want to have a few select electronics safe, but in the long run, they wouldn't help much. Maybe I should be storing more useful information on my electronics.
I would contact the rest of the group to confirm the meeting point, pack everything up (including putting electronics into improvised Faraday cages - aluminum foil and an oven) and get out of the city if it's early enough and the roads are not blocked already with other people trying to get out. I would find a spot as close as possible to the destination and disconnect the car battery connectors then I would listen to a radio and wait for the emp to happen. And pray a lot.

I dont think so, and I am doing the math.. or maybe someone on here is a expert on statistical calculation and will correct me but 12 percent sounds like BS. Now I do math on my fingers, so I am no expert on statistics but just of the cuff dont any of you think that is high? dont any of you question that? 12 percent chance is huge we would be having that happening every decade or so, And I dont think thats been happening?
So I googled carrington and low and behold it is a event that scientists have found repeats itself roughly every 500 years.
So we are roughly 150 years since the last one, so 350 to go, I dont know what that is statisticaly but its not 12%. When the russians and nasa agreed that a carrington event had a12 percent chance of happening in the next 365 days it must have been at a conference where those russians brought some vodka and moldovan wine.
Someone must know how to calculate the true odds, wouldnt it be 350/500=.7 percent chance , or is it 1/500= .002 percent chance in any given year of a 500 year period.
See you all after.
I agree about the average of 500 years, but. If an event happens 3 times in a 1000 year period then the average is 500 years. So, if the last solar event happened say, oh I don't know, 850 years before the 1859 event, then one that happens 150 years later would keep the average at roughly 500 years. They didn't say the events happen 500 years apart, only that it was the average. Another factor to consider is that the big brains tell us that we are starting to pass through the galactic plane which is playing holy hell with our sun and solar system. Since the last time we passed through the galactic plane was some 26,000 years ago, that could be throwing a monkey wrench into the 500 year average. Personally, I'm not a big fan of EMP, natural or man made, though I do have some preps for it (just hedging my bets). My major concern is economic collapse. I was just putting in my 2 cents worth.
