question... does anyone know the law concerning constructing a fortress in a wilderness setting? think of remote back country... then clear out a field on high ground and plop a scaled down version of a medieval castle on top of it. then bunker network underneith it. Legal?

No reason it wouldn't be legal. They might look at you funny when you go to get your building permits. 😎

I wasn't really thinking too much about prepping until Y2K came. At that time I thought it unlikely...but at the back of my mind was that nagging 'what if?' Better to prepare for something that doesn't happen, than be unprepared if something does happen.

My wife is a novelist and she wrote two books set here in Alberta where the power grid unexpectedly goes down and people simply have to survive. (The books are Martha's Vine and Martha's Mirror, btw.) While she was writing, we had many conversations about what would happen in reality if things really went south.

We were completely unprepared. As discussion moved from conjecture into the realm of...holy crap...this could really happen...we started quietly getting ready.

Not sure what, if anything, will happen. But the investment of time and money has been well spent.

I'm thinking a financial implosion is most likely...and I think many of the signs are there. Solar flares. Terrorist acts. Vicious weather. We live in a new society.

As a few of you know, I had been unemployed for over a year, the EI lasted me 8 month and I had just emptied my RRSP, my larder is low and my freezer almost empty. Just found a job, but the point is, if I hadn’t prepped, with an RRSP, a full larder and freezer, I would have been looking at bankruptcy with no vehicle. The bills will be slow to get paid, the credit will take a 1/4 of my pay for the rest of my life, but we still have a house, a vehicle and food.
Better to have a little than nothing at all.

Badda Bing! This says it all! A disaster need not be some Hollywood epic. It can be something as simple as a period of unemployment & high expenses. My wife & I got taught that the hard way in 2009. We are still recovering from that. The recession of 2009 was a real eye opener.

There is a new TV series called Revolution coming this Fall:
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt2070791/

It will likely be watered down & stylized because its 'network', but it could be a good guide.

If it were on AMC or HBO, then you would get a more raw version ala; The Walking Dead or Game of Thrones.

My definition?

When the money they are pumping in to the lower class becomes worthless, then we are very close.

If you are rich and show it, you are the first target.

This may reinforce the criers theory...

Nice post Traveller 65 signs that the economic collapse is already happening should be enough to raise an eyebrow of even the most skeptical. As the situation in the Eurozone worsens to the end of the year The ripple effect alone will damage the already teetering North American economies.

my definition I would have to say would be global. Most likely economic given current world conditions. Our family started 6 years ago after my company got sold for the 4th time in as many years. Hate to admit but we were living beyond our means so we tightened the belt. Fast forward to today we have a well stocked pantry but only for a month (at the moment). I make biodiesel and have over 3,000 litres of oil ready to be converted. We own 3 VW diesels and a kubota 7.5kw diesel gen set. I have a few solar panels but not enough.

We've got so much disinformation going on, it would be pretty hard to tell exactly when something is actually going to happen.
Rumors of a false flag at the olympics, and a major event in america around October, and a banking crash any day now. .....
Will any of it happen?

Since I don't have foresight into the future of my demise or of how and what form a collapse will take, I just need to plan the best I can and surround myself with like minded 'friends' and trained family members. Some people will defy all odds and logic. Others will lose in a game of gargantuan improbability no matter how well they planned. The best laid plans go to complete chit in a time of chaos.

I shall leave you with a quote from Nietzsch:
"Insanity in individuals is something rare - but in groups, parties, nations and epochs, it is the rule." -=- Friedrich Nietzsch

As a child SHTF when my father got cancer, could not work, and we lost our home. My mom was a serious gardener, and she had a year supply of food. That made sure we did not go without much. Sure we lost our house, but the expense of caring for a large family was reduced to a point that we could get by on the limited funds coming in.

The nightmare SHTF is a Carrington event, nuclear war, and or economic collapse.

I never used to pay attention the the news. Lately I have been starting to watch, read and listen to world news at least twice a day. Looking for signs of my definition of SHTF & TEOTWAWKI. I believe it will be an economic collapse followed by a wave of social unrest. Depending on where you live things may deteriorate very rapidly or you may be able to stay in front of the wave for a while. I am glad to have found this network, such a great source of info & ideas for like minded local people.
