Hi all,
So today I took the first steps to preparedness. I visited the local firing range with a Police Friend of mine to receive some instructions in fire arm training. We were using a glock 22 with 40 cal S+W rounds. Turns out that I am a pretty decent shot already! I ended up shooting a little over 500 rounds and different distances, with my best clip of the day at 15 meters (2 mags within a 3 inch cluster).
I will be signing up for proper firearm training, as well as restricted and non-restricted firearm license in August.
The excercise really got me thinking however, because I know that no matter how often you go to a range to shoot and still targets, there is very little practical training that will go towards tactial shooting scenarios. I was curious if anyone on these boards knows of a location where I can receive tactical training, such as shooting from behind cover, shooting on the move, moving targets, etc...like something you would see in military training. I know the obvious answer is "sign up for the military", but I am not willing to do that. Surely there has to be a school, or a gun club that offers these kind of courses in the Calgary or southern alberta area?
See you all after.
Congratulations. You are on your way. Glad you foung it interesting and that you are eager to progress. I don't know of any schools or courses in Canada... but as in many things training is about muscle memory as well as mindset. You can develop a level of both in your basement. Handling your firearm, doing "point and shoot" with an empty firearm, practicing magazine changes and tactical reloading can all be practiced. Just a thought.
I do plan on home trianing as well of course, I have to purchase a firearm first lol. I was just curious if there is anything like that in Alberta. I know they are quite popular in the US, with the gun loving and all.

Your police friend should know about PPC or police pistol combat. I took an intro course at the range in Victoria a few years back. It trains you to shoot silhouettes at varying distances using different stances in a certain amount of time. A great way to hone your pistol skills. I'm sure it's available at the Calgary Rifle and Pistol Club.

@wookie, I checked out that link real quick, and I think it just shows different tournoment events they have. My question is... where do you go to train for those events hahaha
See you all after.
Glad people are taking up pistol shooting there are two main events for pactical shooting and lots of ranges take part. International practical shooting confederation, http://www.ipsc-canada.org/ very cool courses. The second is International Defensive Pistol Association, http://www.idpacanada.ca/
Keep it up! Only issue is ammo starts to get expensive! You shot what $250 That day. Practicing at home is a great, I would suggest investing in a good 22 pistol to get as much shooting in as possible. I always take my 22 to the range with me if nothing else warm up with it and practice moving while shooting before spending the money on the big stuff.

I wasnt that expensive actually. luckily for me he has a large stockpile of reloads from a US police service where he purchases it from. But when I get out on my own im sure it will add up. I will definatley have to buy in bulk through a reasonable dealer or individual, and start making preparations for doing my own reloading.
See you all after.
We trained through ipsc and they actually teach you how to shoot fast, with accuracy and safely. It does get expensive on ammo though. Dynamic shooting is nothing like the movies; everyone knows that in their mind but it is more obvious when you actually have to run from target to target and hit what you're aiming for.
We've been out of it for a year 😥
Good for you buggie, my suggestion is you by a 9mm with a 22cal conversion kit...Glock or Sig has such a thing probably others do too but I cant think of them right know.. that way you use the same gun and you have a very cheap method of practicing 22 cal is very cheap and 9mm is the cheapest for large cal handguns have fun and good luck...
Better to have it and not need it; then to need it and not have it...
Howdy Buggie,
Glad to hear you are enjoying your day at the range. I just wanted to reinforce the points made about shooting .22 LR. As these cheap rimfire cartridges travel a bit slower down the pistol barrel, you have to hold your sight picture a fraction of a second longer. This means in the end you develop stronger shooting habits. Of course, it is less expensive to shoot 10,000 .22 LR rounds a year than the same in 9mm or .40 S&W or .45 ACP. If you plan to shoot often it is in your best interest to also start reloading your own ammo.
Just my 2 cents,
Mountainman.
Any female preppers interested in heading to the range to learn how to handle a firearm? I would like to learn how to handle any form of firearm but not sure where to start. Guidance in this area is greatly appreciated.

I eventually do plan on learning to reload my own ammo for sure. One step at a time though haha. still have to register for my PAL, purchase a firearm, and do some practice. Then find a space to do my reloading, and work at that. Definatley want this to be as enjoyable and a scheap as possible! thanks for the info team!

What is EID land?
See you all after.
Eastern Irrigation District...they own lots of land out of the city , Brooks being a semi-desert environment that has no river needs to bring in irrigation or we would all die!
