If and when the US fails then what really worries me is the a-hole that will fill the vacuum.

On this note... I'm writing a story related to this topic for the NaNoWriMo competition (write a book in a month) and have yet to decide what is a most likely global event to take place... solar flare? Global currency collapse? Meteor strike? Polar flip? What do you guys think might be most likely? I want to tell the story of different people in Canada as they are each faced with different circumstances all from the same event. Ideally I dont want this to be an immediate planet killer scenario... it can be near the end of the book of course so a slow killer if at all. Ideally, something survivable but kills off most. You get the idea I think .

How about a global emp that shuts down the grid, leading to the CDC bio containment units to fail, resulting in a flu epidemic that kills millions, leading to an economic collapse that results in increased homeland terrorisim. Then the terrorists hijack nuclear warheads and detonate them causing catostrophic radiation and fallout, which gives rise to human mutant zombies. Then right at the end of the book when the zombie hordes are at your doorstep, a meteor collides with earth killing everyone.

You have to admit, you'd get points for creativity!
