When Metro had pasta on for 99cents for 907g a few weeks ago, my friend and I bought 25 bags each of rotini, spagetti and linguine, we vacpacked it with oxygen absorbers and sealed it in a giant bag! Then put that bag in a food grade rubbermaid style containers and then sealed those as best we could.
When we find a deal we adjust our lists to buy the deal and cut back on something else. We then spend a few extra minutes at home to adjust menus, storage, whatever we have to.
When meat is on for 1.99 a pound or less we buy 20 pounds and freeze it, process it... make it last! We went months not eating ground beef because pork roasts and eye of the rounds were cheaper! We can male a $7 eye of the round last 4 meals. We can only make $7 of ground beef last 2 at best.
When toilet paper is on sale, I try to find an online coupon and get 3 or 4 for even cheaper.
Milk is on sale, we freeze it!
We can make our own chips and snacks from what we have at home but, popping corn is about to skyrocket in price (and is a favorite) so we stocked up on that a few weeks ago too.
You have to start getting creative & super frugal! Everything is rising in price. I have found that what used to be affordable is now almost out of reach.

And I thought we were the only ones eating a lot of pork roasts. Still have a lot in the freezer. 😉

I am lucky. My 2 friends also come with and we will all have $20 in hand. We try to find 3 roasts each for 20. Usually we are good to go! lol but our store sells out so fast (restaurants fill carts with roast! pisses me off! they go to the young cashier and freak out so she just rings them through... ughhh) we always have to grab it the first day of the sale before noon. I am a single parent who has been able to stay off the system, working from home and part time/odd jobs. It hasn't been easy but we have done it. Be frugal, take advantage of sales and plan ahead when and where you can. So far so good! (and we are a chunky bunch, no one going hungry here lol)

The price of peanut butter, nutella, raw almonds and coconut oil really were an eye opener 3 months ago. We have 1 jar of PB left and I refuse to pay full price for it! $6 a jar... not happening! 👿 👿 👿

It is already paying for us.We are fully stacked with most of our food needs and we buy now only if it is really on special just to add.Now when we go to the store I just shake my head and laugh.
Guys do not be so offended if somebody points out few thinks to you.I remember when I said that some of you romanticized survivalism I received ugly PM.

And most of us do have the ability at least in Canada to help grow some of our own food, even if its only in small amounts or using community gardens, or finding and using good food box's or hidden food harvest programs etc etc, and yet so few peaple choose to reach out to these different methods to help fill their pantries.

I will be the first admit that last years heat effected our ability to grow food, we went from taking over 2000 plus pds out of my gardens down to just over 700 hundred pds, the early spring with a late frost took out most of the hard fruits and the droughts damaged/reduced the soft fruit crops, add in the effect on pasture and the reduced amounts of hay combined with the rising costs of critter feed and a very bad year for growing my own critter feeding crops and did we need to dig deeper to for things this past year.. you bet..

Did if effect my ability to go down into the pantry and find what I need, not yet.. because while I do keep a eye on things and makes sure they are being used evenly as possable, the fact is we had amazing crops and growing years in 2010 and 2011, both of which allowed many of the basic's to be put up in two or three year amounts for what my family needs..

Do I hope for a good garden season of course, have I got plans in the works for ways to help the garden grow if we get high heat/low rain again, you bet.. have I done my best to hedge the bets.. O ya..

I am with Henry and operate in a similar fashion. We usually go into town once a week to get a few groceries and see what is on sale. Last Friday there was freezing rain and the highway was closed all day due to an collision. So we didn't go in and don't plan to until next weekend. We are not missing out on anything but if we go over two weeks I would be missing some dairy products (milk and cream) plus bananas. Come to think about it those are the only staples that we buy every week. The last time we in there were tins of tomatoes for 88c so I bought a couple of cases. Once you do get your food supplies stocked up you can save a small fortune by doing as Henry said and shop the specials.

That's how I shop too. I really hate paying full price for something I know will come back around on the sale calendar. I started a price book years ago to mark the prices of our most commonly eaten foods and when they went on sale. Most items rotate through about every 6 weeks or sale. If cheese is on sale one week at No Frills it will be again in a few weeks. If you buy enough to last from sale to sale - you will never pay full price again. Black Diamond cheese is anywhere from $6-9 for 500gr. My goal price is always less than $1.00/per gr. The best price from the last few years is $3.49/500gr. but sometimes $4.44/500gr. will have to do 🙂

I gotta chime in with Henry on this too. We NEVER buy food at full price.
As Anitapreciouspearl pointed out, things go on sale at about a six week rotation.
If you get a six week supply of all your basics, you will rarely pay full price for anything again.
We save a ton of money this way.
And BTW, take that price book with you when you go to Costco, you'll be surprised what isn't a good deal there!

Today I was serving food for needy in town and on my way home I stopped at independent they still had pork for $ 1 lb could not resist to buy another 15 lbs and we just finish making another butch of sausages.I hope winter is long so I can sit inside and munch on them.So far we made 30 lbs of sausage and 3 good size salami.Life is beautiful should have retired 10 years ago.(ha,ha)

If you get a six week supply of all your basics, you will rarely pay full price for anything again.
We save a ton of money this way.
And BTW, take that price book with you when you go to Costco, you'll be surprised what isn't a good deal there!

Speaking of Costco...they have an excellent prices on 1.5 kg of virgin coconut oil and truRoots organic pre-washed quinoa. I haven't found cheaper prices anywhere even on sale for these two items. Take a calculator to Costco too...they don't have a consistent system of unit pricing so you may have to do a little math to figure out their costs per x unit to compare to the grocery store cost per x unit.


I'm the lady you're stuck behind in the grocery store with the over loaded cart filled with cases of tuna, peanut butter, huge bags of rice and the weary looking husband
