Corn up over its 5 year high by $150, Wheat off its 5 year by $50 and talk of war would mean high oil prices. Now put one and one together and you have to potential for a massive price spike on everything you use. I am not fear mongering as this IS happening. What you do with information given to you is your choice. I for one am loading up more this month.

Prices will never go down...even if no disaster ever strikes, stocking up on food is simply a good investment!
Growing your own food is the only way to stave off inflation on food prices.

I was simply stating that there is a high probability that there will be a high price spike and not a gradual one. Yes I know growing your own food is the only way but there may be people in apartments or somewhere else that do not have the luxury of growing their own food. I am in transition myself and am continuing to build a home so I do not have time for gardening and am stuck in an apartment for a few more months yet. I need enough food to last me till next harvest. For some I am stating the obvious but this post was not meant for those people.

The prices will never go down. Somethings that I purchase on a some what regular bases has already increased by over 40% in the last month. To me the high price spikes started last year when pasta went from a regular price of $1.19 to $2.19 in a few months and the sizes have gone down.

Food prices continue to climb to the point in the future many people will be unable to afford buying groceries. Thats one of my biggest fears.

Where in my reply did I get snippy?

You would never accuse anyone else of having a poor attitude, that much is obvious.

Around here the food banks are empty. They are begging people to help. I think I heard that the use of the food bank was up by 28% so far this year but the donations are down. With all of the crop failures due to the weather this year, I doubt I will be able to afford to do as much canning or dehydrating as I should be doing.

To state for the record...
I have in the past and will continue in the future to call people out on poor attitudes!
Gravlore, you are not special in this way. Your stating that I would not accuse anyone else this way just shows how narcissistic you are.
Here is the long and short of it folks...
I was on this board before any of you (yes, I am member number 4...there is the admin, two of his friends, then me) and I am the ONLY one who ever stepped up to get this forum and the associated blog up and running.
For the most part, members here are respectful, knowledgeable, and helpful.
But there have been a few of you ungrateful buggers who really make me wonder why I dedicate the amount of personal time to this place that I do.
I have absolutely had it with the petty bickering that some members can't seem to avoid.
I suggest some of you learn how to put that innocent, sunny disposition you claim to have into written words.
In my opinion, there are a few members here that incite tension at every chance.
This is called trolling, and I have had it.
Trolls will from now on be banned for life.
If you don't like it, please feel free to find another Canadian prepping site to join.

Agree, Food prices are going up and will continue to climb, its taken a whole year of watching sales to see sugar finally come back on sale and we have picked up another several hundred pds for storage.

I agree with Denob that the only really good way to control the food prices is to grow your own and or to work with other gardeners and or gleaners (for those in towns and cities, there are now large community programs that will match those in apartments with those who have gardens and you split the end produce) and many more cities are now having things like ottawa hidden harvest, or Toronto's Not far from the tree.. which collect the information on where the city or the home owners have fruit and nut trees and bushes that they don't pick or use, these wonderful programs also offer teaching courses on how to can, make perserves, dry food and properly dry and harvest nuts etc.

Add in the amazing always growing communtiy gardens, a girlfriend helped set one up in toronto area, and they were able to get start up money from the city in really good amounts and worked with a church to get a garden going in a very low income/food dessert type area..

Also don't forget to talk to the local farmers about seconds if costs are a issue at the markets, personally even as a farmer, I tend to walk around the markets giving the evil eye to the prices that I see them charging, I do buy different things from the organic tables for old hertiage but only one or two and only to then harvest the seeds for my own use in the gardens, often much cheaper to buy one large XX and have enough seed for two or three summers vs buying them from the seed companys, what can I say, I can be frugal at times.

I do have to agree that the local food banks are saying its one of the worst years they have had in a long time and I don't see a end in sight to it, I am already looking the rising costs of corn, and hay and am making deals with the farmers around me to buy as much direct as possable cutting out the middle man, I will pay them more then they would get at the market for selling to me, and still only end up paying 60 percent of what the stores are asking for the same amount.

Denob,
where is the like button

LgsBrooks, there is a history to this Individual and you are a very fair, honest and polite person.
Go back into Gravs posts, he removed all of his posts because a few people had commented about his demeanour and attitude, so he went and removed all his posts, now is back commenting on others again, so ..... things happen to mods and others when this happens.

Well here we have a post that has seems to have grown into three different directions.

The first post was regarding food prices: "Corn up over its 5 year high by $150, Wheat off its 5 year by $50 and talk of war would mean high oil prices. Now put one and one together and you have to potential for a massive price spike on everything you use. I am not fear mongering as this IS happening. What you do with information given to you is your choice. I for one am loading up more this month."

Then dissention developed, food banks were discussed and finally growing your own food was talked about. So what do I answer first? I guess in order.
Food prices on the rise for sure, so are feed prices. Will they go down? Sure they will the same time as gasoline prices tumble: NEVER!

There is an abundance of diverse of views on this site. Not everyone agrees with everyone else. However, every opinion is valid. Whether popular or out in left field, whether right or wrong all views are valid. In a discussion group there will always be dissention as there should be. This is a healthy situation, good for the site and good for the group. Read posts digest them agree with them or not but always remain calm.

Food banks are indeed in dire need this year. However having had considerable experience with our local food bank making donations, helping out and even organizing and running fund raisers I would have to save in the current climate I am done with them. There are people in need for sure and that is the sad part but unless food banks can get their acts together and do some "policing" of recipients I'm done with them. All I was doing was supporting peoples drug habits. They would take their welfare cheque spend it on drugs then go to the food bank for food. Then go back get more food and trade that for more drugs. Not isolated cases but almost the rule. Who has the fullest pantries? The drug dealers. I will not support that system.

That was a great post by Farmgal. Growing your own food or at least some of it is the answer. However for most it is difficult and for others, the majority, it is impossible.

Sorry I was just trying to use the food bank as an example for part of the reason of what I believe. I will try to explain myself more thoroughly next time.
