We have Shaw Direct and live in Eastern Ontario and these are the programs for Oct.27th,2013 on the National Geographic Channel?
1) Last Days of Man: Top Ten Ways to Extinction
2) Aftermath
3) 24 Hours After: Asteroid Impact
4) American Blackout
Can you imagine getting supplies after the airing of these programs?? I would bet there will be a run on everything.
I don't read too much into this type of programming. There have been a string of post-apocalyptic/survival programs popping up for quite some time now (especially since the Doomsday series). On the History and Discovery channels they even have marathon weeks of these types of shows. Plus the fact that Halloween is coming up and it being the tail end of the US preparedness month I am not surprised at the choice of programming. These programs get good ratings and in the media that is what counts.
I am not saying that there may not be something more sinister behind these choice of programs (in fact I think there might be), but I would not worry that something major will happen on October 27th. Of course I could be wrong. I mean we are all prepping because we think there is potential that something bad could happen - so you need to decide for yourself, if you think this day of programming is worth fretting about. I choose not too - and hope I am right.

I certainly am not suggesting that something will happen on Oct. 27, saying that, I think we are all worried that something eventually will happen or why would we be prepping.
No, that isn't exactly what I was thinking and guess I was being too subtle.
I am hoping that by putting these all on on one day, may wake up a lot or at least a few people and they will begin preparing for the next disaster AND by posting it here, we can all pass on the programming date to non-preppers and a few may see the light.
I look around at my neighbours and know that none are preparing for tomorrow let alone another major occurrence. They all went through the Ice Storm '98 but learned nothing. They could drive to Ottawa to get supplies. We are fortunate, in our area, to have not had any major stuff happen, yet.
For most, they have suffered minor comfort disruptions and not witnessed (in person) the destruction, devastation and human suffering from a hurricane, which of course is only one of the many things that could happen.
Whether people believe or not, that something is going to happen, is the difference in prepping and not prepping. Everyone can choose what they watch but the programming on Oct 27 and marathons like it, will maybe change a few minds and by doing that will benefit all of us by having a few less sponges.
Sorry for the confusion, I misunderstood the post. I thought you were suggesting something was going happen in or around that day.
I completely agree with you. The more people that wake up the better and these programs do help. Unfortunately, I don't see it in my little neighborhood. I had hoped that the ice storm would have shown my them something, but it did not. They were helpless then and will be again if something happens. If it hadn't been for my rallying everyone together during the ice storm, my neighbors would have been far worse off. Once we started working together it worked out fine. But that was only a short term problem. In the event of a more serious event, my larger plan does not include them and they might be a bit surprised if I am no longer there.
Adagio,
I feel your pain with the neighbors. We have both major snow most years and hurricanes here. My area had a winter with one 20" blizzard and then a 3-footer inside a month or so, and people were still rushing for supplies. The fact that the stores can't look at weather reports and get enough generators, de-icer and snow shovels in kind of slapped me in the face one year - these are people who want to make money, but they always end up sold out. I end up not really listening to weather a lot (I have what I need, so unless it's a hurricane with possible evac, ehn, who cares?) and periodically pull into a parking lot without thinking. These are people who have to rush for batteries, water, food, charcoal, fuel wood, and TP at least 1-2 times a year. Seems like they just can't learn to save themselves some hate and discontent.
Of course, I was surprised to hear how many people in a recent class thought boiling water and making one of those rice pouch things was cooking-cooking, and it made me ask at my clubs. It's a pretty common epidemic. Only older, poorer people or foodies seem to be cooking much at all. Indicative of the national mentality, at least here. I grew up kind of "weird" because we sat and played games and sat and had supper together, but I've been forced to tell people I spent my vacation "cooking, cleaning up, playing cards, and laughing" and blinking when they stare, expecting something else. I'd like to save the world, but I don't see much hope for a lot of it so I'll grab the little ones I can and see how it goes from there.
Maybe Nat Geo owns stock in generators and bottled water companies. 😉
Maybe they do own stock 🙂 That would be a good reason for the marathon.
American Blackout was well worth the time to watch. It sure gave a good description of what could happen during a 2 week blackout. The ending was especially true, you need people to back you up.
