A very sound post, Maple Leaf Pilgrim. Especially applicable to any preppers' immediate circle of family, friends, survival/prepping group.

Without a doubt, firearms are the #1 most important piece of equipment a prepper has. Its your last line of defence if police/military/government cant protect you and cant provide disaster relief. No looter will choose your house as a target if you have a firearm but 10 houses beside you are unarmed. If you show your able to protect your resources, then no shots are likely to even take place. At the very least, I would have a bow or crossbow. If 2 people in your group had bows, then one could cover the other after shooting. Even if self defence was not a good reason, then the ability to hunt should be. Even one single .22lr rifle would probably double your chances of survival if shtf. The weakest link always breaks first, and if shtf the weakest links will be people who have a machette and baseball bat, if the guy surviving beside you has a firearm as a deterent. No sense to keep 2 years worth of supplies if it csn be taken after 2 weeks if shtf.

People, Remember that this is not a secure site, and you can be sure that there is a ghost or two among us marking down who says what on what they have. If you don't think that they can find out who your are and where you live, then you are delusional. If marshal law is decreed, then you can be damn sure that someone will knock at you door demanding you weapons at gun point, Just like they did in the states with Katarina. Be wise, collect and don't advertise.

Get a membership in the NFA or CSSA and stand up. Spend the time making the freedom thieves realize they won't get into power as long as they continue to suppress our rights and freedoms. Trust me, we really want to deal with this at the ballot box phase. The bullet box phase really sucks. I know, I've seen it.

I'm posting this 10 minutes after reading it, because I had to clean chocolate milk out of my keyboard and floor.

So this is where all the ex-military folks are.....shove over. I'm coming in.

I agree and disagree with much said. I lived in a city long enough(20 years) to teach my kids to head for my home at the first sign of SHTF. If its nothing, they had a nice visit and can return. My point is that everyone needs a solid PLAN B of where to bug out to. Cousin George's farm is likely the place many other cousins will head for too. Carrying 5 guns leaves little room for other things you might need (just a thought) but preparation and planning are the top of the list.

Buying an old RV is cheap nowadays(cause their gas pigs) but when you bug out, you wont have to share a bunk with your cousin...and he might not slam that door so quick. And you might want to invest in that farm before hand so he'll save you and yours a seat. You gotta have things others need before they will want you because otherwise your just another mouth to feed.

I own guns too but the thought of a mass exodus from cities will put a drain on even the wildife here in the far north. I hope never to be in a battle so my weapons selection is based slightly more towards usability in hunting as a first priority(but my military background maintains a strong influence). I camo a gun so if I intentionally drop it, others will be less likely to find it. I own 1 dress suit , yet 4 sets of camo. That's so each of my kids have a set because I know they don't yet. And the camo is so humans don't see me(unless I wish them too) and shoot at me.

I used to bow hunt alot but now my hands go numb(and I'm too old school to adjust to these new releases) easily so I use a crossbow if I wish to be silent. Being quiet means others wont come running when I shoot something. Also I don't practice enough nowadays to stay with the bow either.

I cant imagine where I could bug out to as I'm already as far back as you'd want to be without total isolation. The thought of a bunch of survivalists invading here is more likely than the government heading this far out. That is why the "lock and load" mentality" is somewhat unnerving. Preppers in the city will have to prove their worth to country folk and that's not going to happen by waving your gun. Chances are they get more practice with shooting something( as most folks here are hunters and trappers) and likely have more useful knowledge to offer you than the other way around. Work on that premiss and you'll fit in far easier. Land up here is cheap to buy(under $5,000 a nice lot) but many city folks won't fit in just cause they own a plot.

In bad times, trust will be something you have to earn, that means you should visit and help your neighbours so they'll side you in the bad times. Simple things such as NOT waving when passing a neighbor are viewed poorly and some country folk use a weapon called "gossip". The military taught many of us how to work with others but the city undoes that somewhat. There is good and bad to both but country folk come together in times of crisis whereas city folk wouldn't know how!

~ just something to think on ~
