the offical numbers are much smaller then what the final tally was. the media stopped reporting after the "big show" but the hospitals were still scruggling, EMS couldn't pass some roads and the clean up surely took some time. that's a massive incease in numbers but the BBC is a good source, i'm sure they checked the numbers some what. i think we all realize it doesn't stop when the storm finishes.
Hurricane Maria killed more than 4,600 people in Puerto Rico, 70 times the official toll, according to estimates in a Harvard University study.
A third of deaths after September's hurricane were due to interruptions in medical care caused by power cuts and broken road links, researchers say.

Official numbers are just that, official. It’s what they wish to acknowledge. Meanwhile, any fool knows that the real numbers are something else. Gov doesn’t want media showing folks how incompetent thier efforts are because it means answering questions. Best the dumb citizen not be bothered and instead focus of some sports event and not worry pretty head about their failure to prepare critical infrastructure.
I made a comment once before about the sad need to have more disasters in the hope people truly wake up. No one wants to see old, sick or young people hurt but unfortunately, people tend to only react when they get hit. They go back to sleep again shortly afterwards but maybe, just maybe there is a chance people stay focused.
There’s many reasons gov does not wish to address issues. One just need look at montreal, NB, Calgary, ottawa... with floods on rivers. No shit Sherlock, your building on rivers edge, you have more homes and asphalt in the burbs quickly collecting rain and dumping into sewers instead of slowly going into the dry ground. Tile drainage on farms, drainage of land so developers can build homes etc etc. Don’t build on the edge of a river and only be one to two feet above water level. I frankly have no sympathy for people who do.
Of course developers and those councillors and mayors who they donate campaign money too all want to build in flood zones. Devoper says, you don’t permit building, no campaign money and all those folks will go give tax money to next community who does permit stupid building. Simple greed and then stupidity of public for not thinking. Look at New Orleans, still living in a fish bowl, didn’t raise levee levels, still lousy pump systems... west coast is the same, dykes that are decades old with gopher holes in them, new developments built in fishbowls meant for farm land. Total insanity, but help, help we are drowning!
So preppers have only a few options. One try not and live in areas prone to natural disasters, two, make sure you can get out if you are, three try and raise the issues at local area by asking city council.. why are you permitting a development in an obvious flood zone, on a clay cliff edge...and too make sure developers set aside massive amounts of money in escrow accounts to pay for the rescue of the dolts who do build in places able to support homes. Taxpayers should not be on the hook for these dumb planning endeavours. Self inflicted pain, the human race is really good at doing that!

What kills me is the cry for Government help. I built in a flood zone and" I DON'T HAVE INSURANCE!"
People getting government assistance... Kind of makes me wonder why I've paid insurance premiums for the last 40 years, when people who've saved this expense get financial assistance anyway? Who's the Dummy now?... 🙁
None you improvise, one (or more) is luxury.

As I have lived in BC most of my adult life when not being a government asset I have seen what you're talking about. Many years in a row the river / lake floods yet nobody does any mitigation work and every year its "Oh look I'm being flooded ... AGAIN. "I shake my head at that.

Wayne,
You may want to do some research on flood insurance and government assistance before making erroneous postings like this. Who indeed.
I found the subject interesting so I did use the google machine. I have no understanding as to why flood plains are being built on, other than our political process where money from developers can influence our representatives.

Overland flood insurance is available through insurance companies (I paid $260 annually). I would suspect however that this rate would be substantially increased if I lived on a flood plain. Areas prone to flooding may not be insurable. In either case the buyer should be aware of this before the purchase.
People should act responsibly. If you decide to buy or build on a flood plain. You should understand the risk and either get insurance, take your chances or buy elsewhere. Why should the general public be expected to pay for any damages because you decide to live where you want to? This extends to fires, floods and earthquakes.

In a similar light, If you build your home under a volcano and it erupts. Why should the Government (Taxpayer) build you a new home in the same place? I see no difference in building your home in an earthquake zone on a river bank or in a forest. Get insurance, build elsewhere or take your chances... There's no cure for stupidity.
It seems that it's your posting that's erroneous. Who indeed.

So you have been purchasing overland flood insurance for 40 years?

Another erroneous posting? It seems that improvement of your reading comprehension is warranted. Otherwise you wouldn't have found it necessary to ask this question...

I'm locking this one down gentleman.. Both sides have made their points and now its just going round and round..
