In the weeks leading up to the new year, I lost track of how many times I heard people say “don’t worry, 2021 will be better”. Ha! Looks to me like 2021 just sucker punched 2020 square in the jaw and called it an amateur!
Here in Quebec, we will soon be under a curfew from 8PM to 5AM. All non essential outings are banned and punishable by a fine ranging from $1000 to $6000. All non essential businesses are ordered closed. Retail stores can continue to operate with curb side pickup. It’s the harshest restrictions to date. Given that Ontario is also experiencing a sharp rise in cases, I suspect they will follow suite soon. Let’s not forget the Atlantic provinces, where Covid-19 had all but been eradicated. I would bet they are also considering restrictions much like they had last spring, mostly travel related and likely another “bubble” will come along soon.
In any case, there are lots of people that will be exempt. Health care workers, transportation workers, etc. These folks will need to be out on the road during curfew hours. As always though, there will be others out there that are up to no good. If you are under curfew, but need to travel, keep a few things in mind.
Stop for no one, unless you are being pulled over by law enforcement. Have your cell phone with you and charged. If you see someone who appears to be broken down, pass them by. Pull over further down the road and call 911 to let them know someone needs help. Do not assume that if they are out after curfew that they are supposed to be…there are folks out there with bad intentions that are counting on you thinking this way.
Looking at the drama south of the border certainly wasn’t encouraging either. Many of us have our opinions about American politics, but no matter which side of the spectrum you fall into, the whole thing is a shitstorm, and possibly about to get worse.
So, as for 2021 being a better year, well, it may end that way, but here we are one week in, and 2020 is looking more and more like a practice run. I have no crystal ball to look into to offer neither hope, or despair. I can’t say what’s going to happen next, but the way things are going now, you had all better be prepared for the worst, while hoping for the best.
