Covid-19 : Our Bug In Day 31

When the WHO declared the global pandemic, I knew right away that things were going to get ugly. As of March 13th 2020, I have decided that my family needs to go into a bug in situation. This was always the plan, the proverbial trigger has been pulled! Here is a daily update on what we face.

Day 31 –

Heavy rains today and lots of wind. Let’s get that snow pack down! On the bright side, rains like this really help melt winter away. On the not so bright side, the winds will likely cause some power failures. No real worries about that here, as we are well prepared for that, well during normal times at least.

The problem is, or may be, that our emergency power plan does not consider long hours needed for working from home. Our plan is to power up for 2 hours 2 -3 times per day when we recharge battery powered items, cool refrigerators, refill water containers, watch some news, check emails, etc. It is not designed to last for long periods of extended use. Something to think about…

On the bright side, it looks as though Quebec will be opening garden centers, among a few other things, so although we will continue to start our own plants indoors, we will go to the garden centers if the seedlings fail. Growing food is a major project this year.

While we’re on the subject of seed starting, we replanted almost all of our seedlings today. Most had gone leggy, or failed to sprout at all. It seems my concerns about survival seed banks have proven right. Most of what did not germinate came from that seed vault I had lying around for a few years. Note to self: start your own seed saving plan!
