Are You Putting Up Food?

Now is the time of year when prepper gardens start to produce. Are you busy putting food away? If not, you should be.

I honestly can’t tell yet just how bad a second Covid wave will be. Perhaps just a ripple, maybe worse than the first. It’s just too early to tell how things will play out. There is no pattern of seasonality to look at, and we still have to see how strong the anti-mask movement gets. One thing is for sure, it’s etter to e prepared.

For the last week, my dehydrator has been running almost 24/7. I’m getting produce gathered up for home canning, and I’m planning cold storage for what I expect to be a bumper crop of potatoes.

Not many of us have the land to be able to produce all our food. I know I don’t. What I can do is grow and preserve as many vegetables as I possibly can. Things I can’t raise for myself such as meat, are bought on sale in quantity and either frozen or canned.

The goals of food storage right now should e simple. Stock up on enough food so that you don’t have to go out during a second wave. Perishables can be tough, but there are options. Milk can be bought powdered or fresh, then frozen. Keep in mind that so far, there is no indication that Covid-19 could threaten the electrical grid. A big thanks for that because there are already enough things to worry about that absolutely can ring down the grid.

My advice: grow what you can. If you live in the city, look for things that can do well in containers and can be stored. Also, look for community garden space. The rest can be purchased at sale prices. As an example, when pasta goes on sale for a buck a bag, get 10 or 20. Stored properly, this will last years!

Stock up now like you can’t go out of your house for several months. Come this fall, you may not want to.
