That's really impressive, Bandit. ...a lot of my favorites too.
I don't see anything that won't grow in the GTA, since that's where all my growing has been,.....but i also am looking for more firsthand info from folks north of huntsville as that's where i intend to co-create a community. How about you? settled on a location yet? ....villager

Very impressive list. For wheat: Grab a 25 lb bag from the LDS cannery. It's so fresh that it grows (I'm growing some now). I like how most of your seeds are nutrient-rich vegetables. As for your compilation of seeds I'd recommend focusing your attention towards medicinal-related seeds since, it seems, you've covered most of the basics. Daniel Vitalis has a great product but recently updated his website so the 'medicinal', survival seed-bank within the video link description doesn't work ( http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ohOAr9xg3zE ). Here's the correct link which details everything (scroll down): http://www.surthrival.com/foods/seed-can.html

While it does contain other seeds aside from the medicinal seeds the product in and of itself was obviously, carefully thought-out. I 'really' like the idea of fiber crops....

If you're interested in bulk, non-gmo, heirloom seeds (of any kind) feel free to pm me directly as I a have a credible source.

I'd like to encourage anyone who can't afford to order seed like that not to get discouraged. If all you can get is a few extra packages at Dollarama, so be it. You just don't know how things will work out in the end - the tables may turn to your advantage.

This is a pretty impressive list
What I would like to know is how do you store seeds for long term and how long can they be expected to live
Thanks Mule

My location is to the east, nothing specific, working on logistics. North of Huntsville sounds nice, how close to the power plant? That's what I want to get away from, I barely lived through Chernobyl I want to be far away from that

I like non gmo and heirloom, I think most of my stuff is certified. I will look at the LDS stuff thanks for the heads up. I do want more medicinal stuff but I'm flat broke this month

That's a lot of counting!

I didn't individually count, just made a spreadsheet from package contents. Bought from multiple places at different times

Exactly, if you have 20 pounds of wheat you can sow then you may survive on bread and water. You can always trade. Get some basics, like lettuce for vitamin.

This is a pretty impressive list

Some can be super dehydrated with dessicants, crystal type cat litter is cheap and works, then stored in jars. Color changing desiccants are good idea, catch a problem leaking container before it ruins the seeds. I can't cryogenicly freeze them but maybe a deep freezer could work.

Some seeds can't be dehydrated, need to read up on that

And need a GOOD book on sowing and harvesting, and seed preservation. Start packaging your own seeds. Buy an apple, save the seeds. Buy corn, dry some out. Easier said then done sometime

I bought a lot of stuff from west coast seeds

Amazing seed list, that's a lot of possible food sitting there, enough that one years where something happens you will be able to replant, for sure

Storage and age is always a issue, some seed I have even at the seven or ten year mark still has reasonable germination rates, other things by year three, you are in dropping massively, and that's with what is considered good storage for the type of seed.

As for books, I highly recommend seed to seed..

http://www.amazon.ca/Seed-Growing-Techniques-Vegetable-Gardeners/dp/1882424581

This is my go to book, but don't forget to stock and store the requirements to make your cages or you will have real issues with crossing of some things that will be a issue for seed saving.

Now the other thing to do is watch your local food movement and find out who is the seed saving experts, your area is bound to have some, and then you can consider doing what a small group of local folks are doing, we hired the expert to come to a spend the afternoon with us and give us a tailored class to our needs.

Once again, impressive collecting.
you will have to be careful in not over drying as most seeds do need a certain percentage of moisture or they will die.

The "Now What?" question has a simple answer. Grow a garden. Each plant will be a learning experience. Many will fail. I've had some doozies of a failure rate this year. Some things I was absolutely positive of...gave me zero yield. Other things like this years small grain experiment couldn't be harvested in any practical way. I had to do it to learn I don't plan on doing it ever again. Can you believe, not a single pumpkin grew. Other squashes cross pollinated, didn't breed true and gave me some mondo mutations. My corn failed and I will struggle to get the amount I planted back. Same with the bulk peas. I was able to learn what I did wrong, gathered just enough for a retry and hope fore success with the second planting. Tomatoes gave us more than the could possibly use. The potatoes gave minimal yield because the potato bugs were so bad. Beans went gang busters.

Next. learn how to collect seeds from what you planted. Some are easy like squashes. Some, like tomatoes and cukes require fermenting before drying. We will experiment bringing some of the plant, like carrots, beets and cabages, completely indoors in pots because they seed the second year, and so far, our attempts to keep them from freezing and dying have failed.

Next. learn to store what you've grown as well as cook what you've actually grown into something you actually want to eat....and replant the seeds the seeds you learned to gather.

I failed a lot this year...and that's fantastic. Its the greatest education I have given myself.

I have a Tactical Harness and I have a Tool Belt. The Tool Belt is more Useful.

What is the general opinion on the best "planting and harvesting for dummies" book? Something that would cover the most plants?

Bee sure to check if you plants need pollinating. last year I planted tomatoes in the green house and I had the biggest and most beautiful plants I had ever seen. I built a trellis system and they grew to over 15 feet tall. The only problem was the flowers where not getting any access to bees inside the green house, so no tomatoes. I only got about a dozen decent sized tomatoes before winter. Once I figured out what was wrong I took a Q tip and started transferring pollen from one flower to every other flower I eventually got about 12 2-3 inch tomatoes. this past year I moved them outside and had much better luck and I let the bees do the hard work of transferring pollen from flower to flower.

But as with everything, unless you actually do it you will never know.

May e Giant fans blowing in the greenhouse to simulate wind? Not the same as bees but saw something similar

You can use the small paint brush's but history says they also used the fluffy dried wee rabbit tails for this job as well.
