When the WHO declared the global pandemic, I knew right away that things were going to get ugly. As of March 13th 2020, I have decided that my family needs to go into a bug in situation. This was always the plan, the proverbial trigger has been pulled! Here is a daily update on what we face.

Day 46 –

Progress at last! With the great weather lately I’ve been able to reach that back area of the property and I actually have everything I wanted to get done by now done. It doesn’t stop there though…this list for tomorrow is already made, so I’ll be back at it. All this work in the yard is so that I can expand the gardening area and improve growing conditions. Tomorrow is tree trimming day, at least in some spots.

We also finally finished converting all our saved up pork into delicious sausages! We ended up with 114 in all. That gives us 19 more meals into the freezer. Boosting our meat storage is now complete, we just have to keep up the inventory with regular weekly shopping.

In all honesty, this whole thing has been a bit of a bust so far. We really did expect things to be worse than they have been, but we also realize that a second wave is on it’s way. With food shortages already showing up in grocery stores, we expect that second wave to have more impact on society. Just how much of an impact remains to be seen.

Our attention is now fully on preparing for wave #2. Food wise, we will be stocking up on staples such as flour, rice, pasta and other grains. We have seen these items in short supply lately, so we feel we can boost our stockpiles for an added safety margin. We may add some fats such as shortening and lard to that list too.

More news tomorrow…
