I may not be looking at the right places, but all I've ever seen are container of powder antibotics. I'm sure there is a way to consume it like that (mixed in a glass of water?), but I have no idea what a proper Rx would be. Any docs out there that would suggest something (unofficially of course...)

It would also be great to get a general idea of which antibiotics better suits what situation. In SHTF situation, I wouldn't care taking those meds for sniffles (I know I shouldn't in non-SHTF either...), but:

1) Large open wound, burns, etc?
2) Pneumonia?
3) UTI?
etc...

Also, in regards to antibiotics...

(There are many that are not penicillin based)

you can get a lot of the antibiotics cheap in Mexico including such stuff as cipro which has actual shelf life of 7-8 years plus according to military. you should also find out how to make basic antibiotics from what kind of molds as this will be helpful when you cant get any more.

I know the us military did a massive study on actual shelf life of medicines would anyone have a copy or know where to find one?

Making your own is not as easy as putting moldy bread in a plastic bag. Here is the best article (that I would believe might work) That I have found online. The chemicals are not ones you would get at the drug store...

Thanks mountain man. I have that book and started reading it. Just haven't made it that far yet I guess. My question though is are fish antibiotic same dosage and concentrations? Is 1 mg of fish amoxicillin the same as 1 mg of human one?

heliocopilot,

That is an excellent question. I am not a chemist or pharmacist I do not know the answer. I would guess 1 mg of any given substance would be the same. I hope someone who knows posts an answer.

While it has been a long time since I kept fish (I had 7 tanks on the go at one time) I believe you treat the tank (volume of water) and not just the fish to get the correct dosage.

Either that or you have incredibly well trained fish??? 8-0

What I mean by that is a matter of concentration within a given quantity. I've been dealing with that with my toddler's Tylenol where I ve had to do some math (with the pharmacist) to figure out what amount I would need to administer.

Not all quantities mean the same. The one thing that would suck more than an ear infection would be to die of kidney or liver failure from antibiotic "overdose".

Reviving this post...

I've found and posted the answers to my own question in the Health forum, in case you are interested. Now, is there a place where you can order online in Canada?

I was looking at a Canadian site recently, I'll see if I can find it.

But guys, that whole fish antibiotics thing is for the Americans. Canada doesn't restrict human antibiotics.

Here's the site I was looking at. But I haven't bought anything yet so I can't give a testimonial. It's on my to-do list.

My mistake, that's not exactly true. Nonetheless, they can be purchased online.

Thanks for the links, but it looks a little sketchy. The drugs are generics made in India and shipped for India. I'm skeptical about ordering fish mox from the USA by fear of customs causing concerns. I can only imagine what packages of pills post stamped in India (with free Viagra included!) will do at the CBSA offices...

At that point, I prefer risking the fish meds made and shipped from the US I think.
