What are we all doing for physical fitness

wow...very hard for me and mine to do...I was feeling great about my 11 1/2 mile walk today...lol...I am a long long way from your sort of fitness plan.

You may think that, but I'm willing to bet that i could get get all that done in half or even a third of the time it takes to walk 11.5 miles. That's almost 20 km. That's the difference man, it's what you can do or what you got the time for. The student, the working professional, the parent has no time for training. It has to be fast and intense.

That said, I want to say that the only reason you exercise like this is to train for the field, for the hike or bike. Also, don't give up the walking man. I believe I've read the SAS have to pass a test where they walk 70 km straight, they talk, fall, or their mask falls off, they're out. Perhaps try hiking in stealth. Leave minimal footprints, avoid branches and things that snap.

For the record I know 55 year olds who crank out burpees, pushups and even throw punches. Movement is key. You may think training like this will wear you down in your old age but what you don't know is it'll be much worse if you don't.

I've laboured for 5-6 years in agriculture masonry, whatever, I've always been a machine. Last eight months I been at a desk, most destructive eight months of my life. I can say I've never been so weak, I've never felt so old. I'm trying now.

RT... If you want to be the best, you gotta train like the best man. I used to be an illustrator and this training regimen was perfect for me. Your father is a very wise man.

In truth I used to do boxing, so I learned how to become a machine without any equipment.

I have an aunt who was in your position. She was 56 years old in 2010, and more than 150 lbs overweight. She changed her lifestyle in order to see the physical changes that she wanted, and has never looked back. She is not the same woman that I remember when I was growing up, because she has lost 135 of those 150 lbs now, 4 years later. She is now 145 lbs, standing at 5' 5". She said that the key is to think long-term. Never get caught up with month-long diets, 6-month fads and short-term changes of habits. Any long-lasting change will only happen by truly changing the lifestyle permanently. The difference is extraordinary. She used to sit at home at bake for my deadbeat cousins, but nowadays she is on long-distance cycling tours exploring the Netherlands, Germany, Algeria, and most recently, Chile. Making permanent lifestyle changes will affect your body for the better, and when that happens, your fitness will repay you by making lifestyle changes that you would normally said, "That would be nice to do, in a different life".

Cheers and good luck to your endeavors. Think long term, but make changes now.

You should switch to a raw food diet. Time to anti up your cooking and food preparing skills. No more pork, just chicken, beef, fish, and if you like, fried tofu. And beef up your salads, dried fruit, nuts, cheese, and use spinach, it's a super food.

Avoid pasta, white bread and sweets.

At this stage in your life you should avoid anything that is too explosive. That said, doing nothing right now is much more destructive than doing anything, and it is NOW or NEVER. Bodyweight squats, shadowboxing, calisthenics, and basic gymnastics are all good.

Walking doesn't help burn fat, really, because there is no thrust. THINK THRUST. Try biking, it is non impactive, easy on the ankles and knees, but you can push hard.

Haha well when you put it like that, I used to rip apart raw organic steak and still drink raw eggs. But you're missing the point, I think.

No newbie is going to be successful in accomplishing a wholly RAW diet. It's just not likely to happen, and I can attest. For me, I need fat in fact I thrive off of it, so butter and oil are good to cook with. Think, cooked steak with raw spinach salad? You get me? it makes much more sense to include raw foods then to wholly depend on raw foods. And at 54 she can not afford to cut out such a significant source of protein.

Also, in a survival situation you will have to eat whatever you can get a hold of. Good thing, dried beans and lentils preserve particularly well.

I've been vegetarian my whole life, and I'm usually the one pushing the pace with my friends, whether it is backcountry camping with a 60 lb pack, rock climbing, running marathons, ironman triathlon, or mountain biking. I eat a ton of lentils, beans, LOTS of leafy greens, red peppers, avocados, pasta, artichokes, garlic, rice and quinoa. No eggs, but I have a glass of soymilk after a workout. My snacks are bananas, oranges, pears, peaches, nectarines, watermelon, grapes, and every kind of berry out there. I do eat what I want if I'm hanging out with friends (cheese pizzas, tubs of ice cream, bags of Doritos, cake, beer), but on normal days, simply combining healthy vegetarian meals with bodyweight exercises and running have kept me healthy. I'm 5'9" and I've never weighed more than 155 lbs in my life.

Singlecell is correct when it comes to needing fat. Absolutely need fat. I cook with a LOT of olive oil (at low heat) if I'm making something like a stirfry, or simply add it cold to my salads. Google up the Wikipedia entry on "rabbit starvation".

Im on a raw food/green juice plan, I have an enlarged heart and can only do so much exercise wise. Walking does burn fat, in 1995 I lost 60 LBS in a month by walking 2 hours 2x a day.

Cool discussion about diet and I've done it all and researched this a ton. I was veg for 13 years, I have done raw food, and now I eat meat and dairy. First and foremost, there is no one right universal diet. Everybody is different and reacts differently to food the way every person reacts differently to medications. That said, I still believe everyone must have at least 50% of their diet as raw fresh fruits and veggies, including loads of greens. I have read about and known many people who have done raw or paleo/primal and the like and they have all lost weight and improved their health and the one thing that these diets have in common is the lack of grains. In addition, not all fats are bad and not all animal fats are bad. Animal foods, including meat , eggs, and dairy can be good or bad, depending on how the animal has lived. Animals that have been factory farmed and fed soy and corn and not allowed to eat a natural diet are going to be unhealthy creatures, with bad fats and cholesterol in them. If we eat them, then we won't be healthy either. If the animals have been allowed to live a natural existence and have grazed and not eaten corn and soy, then they will be healthy and produce healthy meat. Wild game is even healthier. So, the bottom line is, eat loads of fruits and veggies, including a lot of greens, avoid grains as much as possible (I know that's a hard one), eat NOTHING that is refined or processed, and if you eat meat, then be sure you know where that meat came from and how it was fed and lived.

Agree with most of the above post. Went Paleo about 2 years ago at 50 lbs overweight, now down 35 lbs with NO effort and I don't feel like I'm depriving myself of anything.
Wife started a couple of months ago, down 20 lbs so far, maybe 30 more to go.

update...x-ray looked like I had an enlarged heart, echocardiogram shows my heart is normal!!!! I have also lost 7.5 lbs this week.
