Yarn.... when the power goes out or the weather is too bad (this includes extreme heat) to go anywhere, I get the urge to sit & knit. Today I got a "bucket o' yarn" off kijiji. $30 for the bucket and it worked out to about 25 cents a ball! That's a lot of yarn!!! Some fancy yarn and extra needles in there too. 🙂 So I guess I have a new indulgence lol

Hi Mamaizzy

That is a very good buy, I have to admit that I get the "eye" from my hubby ever time I so much as look at new yarn these days, you see two years ago, I got to a farm sale that had a whole wagon full of box's for yarn, and I picked up just over 1000 balls of different yarn in X amount of box's that I bought for 80 dollars total plus tax.. so I have trunks of it put away, and if I go.. ooo, look at that new yarn at the store, he just gives me the look.. but as I tell him 🙂 Sometimes I don't have the right weight for the project I want and get a little new now and again but most often I just trundle upstairs to my personal little yarn store..

Looking forward to the start of farm sales, got two picked out for march, one has alot of crocks and old fashion hand tools both for kitchen and farm use, including a draft animal grain cracking system (I am really hoping that no one else wants this and I can pick it up for a song), and the other one has lots of farm stuff, gates, posts, wire, tools and box's of canning jars, both are in out of the way enough places, and there are at least a couple other sales on the same day, so here is hoping the prices are right and I come home with lots of prepping goodies.

Good price @ $.25 a ball! ...I have not been too thrilled with thrift store prices on yarn lately, almost the price of brand new ... I was hoping to scoop up some more but am still waiting ...

http://www.theauctionfever.com/Auctions/auctions.htm

This is one of the best site for being able to find the local coming auctions that I know of, if someone else knows of others, I would be interested?

They keep it fairly up to date, some of them do photos, some only do write ups, I don't tend to go to many of the ones that are regular sales much, as I find it brings out the dealers and the prices are higher on a number of things, the farm sales tend to have better prices, and the quick 2 or 3 hour evening sales have so far yeilded the best prices if they have what you are looking for -example, I picked up a fully working propane stove for 10 dollars at a 2 hour evening sale a couple years back, its my summer kitchen canning stove, love it..

Is booze and tobacco considered to be indulgences? I generally enjoy a nice cold beer, but i take advantage of vodka and rum when it goes on sale. I try to keep a very healthy supply, same with tobacco. Although I'm no longer a smoker, booze and tobacco are wonderful trading commodities should these items no longer become available. If not becoming a very wealthy person in times trouble, you can take the edge off while the world is going to hell in a handbag.

Spirits like vodka are also very good for sterilization and medicinal purposes, but I can't imagine my special stash of brandy getting poured onto a medical instrument.

Making your own wine is quite simple and the wine kits ( new in the box, unopened) keep for a very long time. Wine from home grown fruits and berries is only one further step than a wine kit. I've known individuals who make their own mooneshine and vodka, and although I'm not sure having a distillery is legal, it would be good to have the knowledge and perhaps some materials to build such a thing.

Spices are easy to store and a must, but seeds are also easy to pack away for when you need them. Chocolate and sweets i don't need at all. Don't eat them now, nor really crave them. Coffee is something I would prefer to not do without. I have an entire shelf full of coffee, both instant and regular grind, and a fair amount of course grind to work in the old fashioned percolator. The hundred year old percolator make the best coffee, better than any machine.

I have make wine & beer mostly for gift giving and to barter with. I have a small stock right now, awaiting a couple of batches to finish to stock up. I rarely ever drink. I am always DD or too worried about the DD drinking when out, so I stop at one at best
and I do not like to drink alone so I never drink at home lol

I have a small stockpile of tobacco as well, just in case (and I smoke too... I know its bad.)
But as indulgences, ya they would qualify. I would look at buying a couple of small beer kits if that is your thing or even the 2 liter bottles that brew in 7 days with a tablet... they are usually around $7 at most brewing stores 🙂 I did a few for a friends birthday... it was sweet because no one had any money then, at least we could all toast with a beer that night! (I had a pop lol)

If you aren't a coffee drinker, you could use that for trade etc as well!

I've never really thought much about home made beer. I've tried it many times and just not impressed. Home made wine seems to have a much more reachable level of standard. I would much rather have home wine than home made beer. Thats assuming, of course, that I have run out of vodka or rum.

The idea of indulgences in times of few, reminds me of a dialogue i read a while back about a young man who lived in Bosnia when the war first started. he had to leave his apartment in the city to make it to a farmhouse in the country that his family owned. Shortly after arriving a battle destroyed the small town a few miles away. One of the casualties was a local distillery in which they recovered several hundred liters of premium alcohol. This amount of prime liquor allowed them to trade for premium products with them naming the price. It was very valuable for drinking, sterilization, and medicinal purposes. During the course of several years of war, they credit the booze as a major contributor to their own survival. He also mentioned that if he had a truck load full of Bic lighters, he would have been a very wealthy man in times of war.

Just food for thought. Booze, tobacco, coffee, and chocolate, whats its value when there is no more to be found?

I don't indulge but honestly, I think weed would be right up there. Good for pain, glaucoma(sp), and makes life more bearable, at least that's what I've been told.

Good point, I never thought about the weed heads. I'm sure they can grow it, but would you be an addict if you had to wait several months for it to grow and ripen?

Then again, whats different from us winos? we would start a new batch long before we run out. maybe a good supply of weed, coffee, booze and tobacco is all one has to store. Everything else can be traded for 😉

Pot is legal. Stills are not. Is trading the same as trafficking?
Here's a link to winemaking. She's very creative.

Whether legal or otherwise, I still think that making wine is the best bet to choose for an indulgence. 🙂

POT LEGAL?
Where are you from?
stills are not legal either...
beer & wine making for personal consumption is legal and fairly easy to do.
There are any number of online sources for beer & wine making kits and I'm sure if you picked up the local yellow pages, you would find something too...
Just remember to stock up on consumables also like corks, bottlecaps, sterilizer etc...
