Well said gc-mountainman; stress will change the dynamics of any group in an instance. I seen that just today with some training we were doing, I was the victim and mentor[ two different scenarios, and saw the big gamer; big talk before the scenario , that individual was no where to be seen when crap went side ways....The naturall leader in times of stability is one thing; high stress that's another. Jones family brought it up at the first meeting,...... MENTALL PREPARDNESS.....you can have all the bunkers and food you could possibly need, but if you haven't sat down and really got into the "mental preparedness" of a post....[" S.really.H.T.F"]..world then "you" will not be able to succeed or thrive....for that matter just being mentally prepared for a 72 hour storm and no power...For what it takes, some weekend this summer, I sujest you turn off the main breaker in your house. And go from Friday night to Monday morning with no power and keep everyone inside, some weekend when they are forecasting rain and crappy weather for a realistic simulation'...and see what it takes to do that with your family.......you will be surprised at how quickly things break down around you.....Try to imagine a 2 week pandemic house quarantine...wouldn't that be fun....

Just food for thought, get the old minds working for our meeting....should be a good one....

Better to have it and not need it; then to need it and not have it...

Don't you think there will be groups that end up with leaders that are due to fear?

Do you mean, those who will use fear tactics to control a group or those who are chosen by the group through fear of the situation?

I've often thought about reaching out to the community at large, since we in are a small town, but I'm really hesitant about it.
A majority are somewhat cliqueish and have known each other for generations. There is also a large drug problem that crosses all ages and that comes with an entitlement attitude, not to mention theft. Telling one of them or a family member of one of them is an invitation to trouble.

We have a few friends in town that don't really get what we are doing or why, but they do tend to think along the same lines, so I am not sure what is between them and moving on to prepping. I'll be working on that, since they are talented people and have talented family as well. They'd be good to have at our side.

So - our group as of right now, is hubby and myself. Our granddaughter and her mother. Leadership is simple. 😀

We don't have a bug out plan because we are on an island. Only people to contend with are likely here already.

Use fear to control the group.

I've found that those who use negative reinforcement (ie:fear) to lead, can get their subordinates to do whatever job is required of them. However, the subordinates of a leader who uses positive reinforcement will often put a little higher quality of effort into the job. When I first got back into the army after many years away, I wasn't in the best of shape. On our morning runs some of the NCO's would scream and yell to make us run harder, I would usually start to run slower and slower. Some of the NCO's would run along side and encourage us in a positive way. For them, I ran my heart out. I once had a company commander whos first words to us was "I don't care if you like me but you WILL respect me." The troops did what was required to get the job done and no more. Another company commander we had, would spend time with us, joke and talk with the troops and got into the dirt and mud with us. We were ready to follow him into hell and back, then turn around and go back in to make sure we did a good job of it.

Well thought out Taz

Never considered that before. I guess that's why everyone likes my boss.

Use fear to control the group.

I think for the most part the "leader" will be dealing with a different group of people. The majority of members of any group will be preppers... those who have taken it upon themselves to do what is necessary to get a leg up on surviving and having the resources and training to take care of themselves and those they care about. This will NOT be a collection of "sheeple"... so anyone who tried to intimidate and use fear won't last long... in my opinion anyway.

Re 5 and 6
Someone said
Tell me and I'll forget, show me and I'll remember, involve me and I'll understand.

My father always said
It's stuff you use and people you look after. Not the other way around.
