I was just wondering if anyone else has issues with their partner over prepping. My wife is exceptionally intelligent, but she refuses to talk about having to prep because she simply does not 'want to think about that'. I have spent most of the summer quietly gathering this and that and stashing it in the garage secretly simply because its easier that way. I know it would be better if we were both on the same page regarding being prepared but any previous attempts at discussion just end with her not wanting to bring "negativity" in to her life. Any advice?
totally... my wife is the same... she sais she's gonna stick with me like glue if the shtf but if you don't run the "what if's and the "what would I do's" when the time comes if your not already in motion ...your hooped... my wife has even thwarted some of my prepping plans( taken 3 mos. food storage and gave it away...) as she feels it is a silly thing and she won't even put her self in the scenarios... no idea pal... I tryed the "zombie plan" with her but it only goes so far.. would love to chat more if your willing...
omg, whats with theses wife's, thankfully me and husband are on the same page. This could be because we both went through the ice storm of 1989 with 3 kids under 5, so big eye opener. Maybe you should point out that normal bad weather can put you in a spot were you can't get out to stores or for medical help. Preppers are just prudent, do the wife's put money away for a rainy day, same thing. You don't want to get cough with your pants down so to speak. Maybe you should turn the power breaker off in the house and say to the family we are having a test , what do we need to help us if we have no power in the house, the wife's might change there mine. And the excuse "negativity" in to her life. well that a cop out, just saying, seeing how my spiritual believe is to be ready for any thing is a positive move, mental and philosophical.
Thanks Folks. We went through Hurricane Juan and got hit hard, not as bad as the ice storm...it wasnt cold yet, but we had no power for a week. We were fine because I had lots of camping supplies and generators etc. so I think my wife thinks that's as bad as it could ever get. She doesnt want to consider having to have enough food for a few months or a year. Anyway, I'll just keep plugging away...stashing this and that and ease her in to the idea eventually ...somehow! Thanks for the input.
crookedstick...Hi, I'm from a southern state...your preps are in the garage?? 😕
I guess you don't need to worry about hot weather there, huh??
But about your question?? I just said, look. That Bristol ham at home on the shelf cost $1.50 in 2009...and this Bristol ham on the shelf at DG cost $2.95...get the picture??
Price increase of about 100% should get anyone buying extra when on sale.
Oh, and I made the mistake of telling my neighbor--don't do that....AND, I'm here to learn any prepping tips.
Thanks, and God bless.
Thanks JayJay,
Yea, I have 3.5 acres wooded and no one can see my house/garage from any angle. I have no basement and no room in the house for supplies but my garage is insulated for the winter and has an oil furnace. It stays cool in summer and I keep it at 5 degrees Celcius in winter. Not ideal but best I can do for now. Good point about rising inflation. Thanks
Great garage---our garage in summer is about 100 degrees....ouch!
I'm lucky to have extra rooms here and a pantry...but when we move, I have no idea where all this will go---must be a 3 bedroom or we are in trouble.
I really don't see moving soon and I'm afraid this nation can't survive many more months of 3 families working to support the 7 not working.
100 degrees ! whew...I'd melt.I guess we pay for cool summers with freezing winters lol. Yes the whole world economy seems to be propped up on toothpicks these days. I think there are three things that need to happen to prevent the inevitable:
1. We need an alternative, viable energy source (Nothing on the horizon that I know of)
2. People need to take responsibility for themselves and their families and stop blaming their situation on outside sources. By saying that I do not mean the people who have lost their jobs and can't find new ones due to circumstances beyond their control. I mean 25 year old men smoking pot and playing video games all day and collecting social assistance.
3.Economic systems need an overhaul and cleanup: I don't know alot about this so I won't pretend to be an expert. However it seems that economies and governments are run or influenced more and more by big corporations and banks. I was surprised to read how the US Treasury is owned by private banks and that there is a perpetual loop of increasing debt that is essentially unresolvable for the United States Government. (I read that in an article recently and I am not sure how true it is, so maybe someone in the States can enlighten me.) Either way, I don't know how changes could be brought about but it all comes down to the fact that western society is replacing the middle class with an out-of-work lower class and with that comes a lower morality because the rich have to screw more people over to get richer and the poor have to do it to survive. I think the opportunity for advancement always has to be present in an economy otherwise it will become, dare I say it...too much like communism, but as with everything these days, the spirit of capitalism has been eroded by a century of small print and legalities sneaking in to the sytem that do nothing but make the advancement of those holding the wealth and power easier. (Watch The Corporation) uh oh I feel a rant coming on...I'd better shut up now 🙂
it's okay..the rant thing...we homemakers, as they call us, when we don't contribute to the household account...we can straighten out the welfare smoochers real fast....if I line dry, cut the water heater down most of the day until time for dh, wash all clothes on cool, keep a/c on 82---yes, on 82, then I can teach some real economics to the moochers to save my tax dollars.
I just read a guy suggest putting moms and dads on work farms to justify that welfare check for that child they couldn't afford--something must be done soon.
As I said...they are in for a lot of hurt...as a cashier, I saw lots of abuse...but 3 families working to support 7 families not working can't continue---the books just won't balance. There will be blood.
Its scary, no question. I was just watching the news at lunch and it said that ZERO...yes zero new jobs were created last month in the USA. It said that your country needs to have a minimum of 150 000 new jobs per month just to keep up with population growth. We are linked strongly economically with you so whatever happens there, will likely happen here eventually. And I checked for all of us Canadians on the site....82 F is almost 28 C 🙂 Thats still bloody hot 😳
But, 82 is pleasant unless I cook all day...Which is the strangest thing about this *&^%^&* house---our electric bills last 4 months...115-100-86-102....now, if this #$@#@## house is so easily cooled, why is it not also easily heated??
Puzzling. So, it must be the heat pump pulling the kilowatts...which is why we use propane.
My neighbor can't believe how low our bills are and she attributes her ridiculous bills to her pool pump----not true...we had one and it did nothing to our electric bills....same as on half day as on all day...we tried and no difference.

I rephrased it - a little, I used to promote it as 'self sustainability' for emergencies - not only disasters, but lean financial times, illness and any number of things that can throw an obstacle your way. Emergencies happen, financial or otherwise ... better to have a plan B then have none.
It is a positive mindset to prep... while everyone else is losing their cool over whatever else life tosses your way, you can continue to function.
Does she ever partake in the flu shots offered annually? The immense line-ups a year ago were quite an indication that many people didn't want to be unprepared for a potential pandemic event.
I was on welfare a long time a go, when I kick out my first husband. I had 3 kids not in school yet. I had a business plan, so I could look after my kids and work from home. but no, they wouldn't let me do that because they said I would make enough money, so I guess I should of bull shit the numbers. Its a messed up system, government control by corporation, who only cares about the bottom line.
I don't believe its the people who are on welfare that are the problem, its the life system that some of us in society fall into. "They" don't want to change it, they need to employ all the people looking after the people on welfare, along with the Crown looking after all the so called criminals and the health care system looking after all the people who have cancers and illnesses from all the chemical we use, that the corporation smothers us in. I've always said to my children, if your going to have a job, make sure its not adding to the already insane system we are living in now.
My girlfriend of many years (she also has two young children) is the same way. She even gets angry at my prepping, and gets upset when I go to my retreat group meetings because she is not 'involved'. But when I try to get her involved, she doesnt want to think about it, and refuses to learn. She thinks its silly. So I hear you on that one. But sure enough if and when it comes, she will be looking at me to save her and the kids. 🙄 *sigh*
I guess i,m not a secret prepper to my family, I say straight out to them, if shit hits the fan, no more food in store , some sort of break down in society. If this happens I told them come here and bring all food item they have along with there winter clothing. And they say, I,m nuts. hahaha. hopefully i don't get the last laugh.
