Hi all!
Looks like work is seeing me moving to the USofA (Alabama to be more precise...)
Wondering if anyone has experience in moving preps (more specifically, guns, ammo and freeze dried/dehydrated food)? I'm guessing I'll have to have to chat with BATF and fill up some forms. Also, how do I make sure I don't get in trouble when coming back in Canada with the above?
Thanks in advance
No luck... No one has similar experiences?
Ok, update on this....
Filled up about 10 pages of forms for BATFE for my firearm and ammo import a few weeks ago, but no news yet. Will wait another week or two before I call them, again... On the plus side, I've ordered a ton of .22 ammo to bring out there, so shortage or not, I'll be the cool kid at the range!
Started depleting some of stored food, it's odd to see the shelves becoming barer instead of fuller... Sigh.
Went house hunting in AL and houses are quite different in the area. AC is a necessity to survive the hot summer months, akin to a furnace in central AB in January. Houses were usually smaller so storage is more limited indoor in a climate-controlled environment. Storing anything in a shed or even garage would expose goods to extreme heat and humidity. I'll have to figure out ways around.
On the plus side, we'll have a big pool, so between the water stored there and the water collection potential, this addresses one problem.
Most houses are covered with bricks and have metal roofs, also a plus from my point of view. On the flip side, there's wild weather. Though tornadoes are not frequent, severe storms with torrential downpours and "straight winds" are commons. The one thing I have to wrap my head around is that there are no basement. So I'm not sure how my family is going to react the first time the sirens go off...
If you've lived in that area and have any prepper experience there, I'm definitely opened to suggestions.!
Geesh , can you find a job to stay in Canada ? I don't like the sound of the housing / climate situation.
No basement, small houses, no storage. What about the garden size ? Is this a country home or one in the city ?
You're going to need a bigger house. LOL
I do like the bricks and metal roofs though .
Prep aside, this is a nice job opportunity that couldn't be missed. We can't always live just for SHTF right?
There is a large yard in an interesting neighbourhood. It is like a suburbia sub division, but miles from town. Neighbourhood is all middle class people and from the folks we be met, they say that crime in the area just doesn't exist - hope it stays like that! There is already a small hobby garden in the back that could easily and rapidly be expanded to a subsistence garden if needs be. Backyard is already fenced (pool) so that is a plus too.
Other pros and cons :
Pro : super long growing season, a solar stove would cook my food in about 2 mins flat! 😉
Con : American economy and being a long back to Canada if needs be to come back home.
Ok .. sounds like maybe that community might be a good type to be with in a SHTF ,
if they are also prepping . Which you'll have to find out if anyone is.
(( I wonder if there is a percentage research of people that are known to prep ?
ie: 1 in 5000 ? 1 in 2000 ? 1 in 1000 ? 1 in 500 ? 1 in 100 ?
And for how long do they prep. ))
Another idea, can you buy a small piece of land in Canada for a BOL if you need to return ?
If you've lived in that area and have any prepper experience there, I'm definitely opened to suggestions.!
I'm originally from north-central Alabama, pretty much exactly between B'ham and Huntsville, and did some time on the Gulf. You're welcome to PM me or post for specific questions.

Houses can be built the way they were in the plantation and pre-WW days, to catch breezes and provide shade. Long term storage is, in fact, a problem and you've got a lot of clay soils, pine-oak soils, and rust issues.
Most houses are covered with bricks and have metal roofs, also a plus from my point of view.
Possibly most houses you've looked at. Generalizing a state by housing type doesn't work and I was one of many in a trailer in that state. My parent's home is brick in the original, wood and siding for one addition, brick for a second addition. Matchstick homes are somewhat common. Cinder block is a regular for inexpensive solid construction of large buildings there, just like many other places in the U.S.
Though tornadoes are not frequent, severe storms with torrential downpours and "straight winds" are commons.
Severe storms I agree with. Compared to Oklahoma, maybe there aren't "frequent" tornadoes, but they're frequent enough to kill people and wreck lives, homes and businesses annually or every other year.
The one thing I have to wrap my head around is that there are no basement.
Depends on water table and property, just like every other state and territory (although Louisiana and FL like to test that one). They are possible with proper placement and distance. My first job had a gym in the basement and my grandmother had a root cellar. I spent several years with sticky summer afternoons reduced by hanging out in storm cellars, root cellars and basements.
Thanks MrsPrepwPets! I will definitely contact you!
I should have clarified that there was no intent to generalize, just speaking about the house I'm getting into.
Not to crap on your move man, but I opted to stay Canada due to all the instability and unrest were now seeing in out daily news. I was offered work in Russia (just after the Sochi Olympics) teaching them how to manufacture the Safari helicopter airframes. I was promised payment "far beyond my expectations" as they put it (how do they know how much I'd expect) ... What made me say no was the thought that once I was over there, even my own government would no longer care as they too are planning sanctions against Russia. How could I trust someone I'd only talked to over a phone? I could sure use the money but can't give that level of trust to complete strangers.
I say this because you know the US is having their own problems and as you mentioned, it's a long way back! At least you have a Canadian company backing you, right? Maybe a trial period of work and commuting is in order first to feel out things first? Just a thought!
I see what you mean knuckle. I'm in for a 3 year contract, but there are a few clauses in there to my advantage. Like "evacuation in case of disaster" which is rather broad and I could probably use as needed. As stated, I can't spend my life living in fear that the end is near. This is a terrific job opportunity for me and an experience for my family that couldn't be missed. I simply have to learn how to adjust my prepper lifestyle to a new environment, something I think I can come out a winner in the long run.
Now, had the job offer been in Somalia, the Congo, Afghanistan, Eastern Ukraine.....
not to pop ur bubble but did you know american governement does all it can to stop people prepping and living off the grid , what shocked me most it wen american governement order to hamish comunity to destroy their canned food un labeled . omg thats insane
this is not the land of freedom has it was beffor
I've noticed that the land of the free isn't so free after all. Had to sell my Norinco firearms as they aren't allowed in the US (though I've noticed that some retailers sell them...).
As I'll be renting out there, I'm accepting the risk that my prepping will have to be more limited in scope. On the flip side, I should be able to save considerable amounts of money; money I can later use upon return to Canada to work toward sustainable living.
A few more weeks to go before relocation....

What ? The land of the free isn't so free! Who would have guessed that?
I doubt that they have found ways to stop the preppers there as Americans seem to have been drilled taught violence is okay from youth...here is the proof

Knuckle, I'm trying to understand how you are connecting prepping with violence. Please explain.

It's a joke dude! 😀 (But they likely could teach most everyone about prepping cause they are always locked and loaded in every movie they produce). Yes, prepping is different to you and me, as I too don't feel that taking precautions is the same as lock and load for the zombie apocalypse. And it was even easy to find that pick on the web to back up the story 😆
There is even more irony in that he had to sell his SKS going into a country that will let him buy an AR-15 to replace it. 🙄 😮
