If you have to leave in a second and only have time to grab 5 things what would it be in a shtf time or any disaster
Also lets say you can grab a bug out bag because your either being chased or your home in being invaded
If you can give a list and why those items

Preparedness is like a condom , I've rather have it and not need it, rather than need it and not have it

1) The bag of all my important paperwork from the deepfreeze...wont usually be damaged in a house fire so they are kept there (marriage license, bank info, account numbers etc)...depending on what is happening I may not get back to get them and they may be needed in the future.
2)Guns/ammo, bows/arrows, slingshots/binoculars-all in same place and ready to go
3)coat...(change of clothing, food, water etc. in the BOB already)
4) If natural disaster and not an invasion I would grab my household binder/recipe book with all my prep info in it
5) Important photos and I'd throw the cats out on my way out the door

Our house burned down almost three years ago and there wasn't much left of the deep freeze...I know I would not like to store important documents in there! Perhaps a fireproof safe would be a better option?!?

1. Important documents
2. All the cash on hand including metals
3. BOB (has change of clothes etc)
4. Weapons
5. My violin and would feel very happy I don't play the piano cause I'd have a hell of a time bugging out with a piano 😆

Musician were often given special treatment in past wars and it helps me escape into a beautiful world when I play no matter what is happening around me!

I used to believe that I wouldn't leave in a SHTF event without my critters but when I had the fire and couldn't find them, I left the house with just my keys & phone. That was after spending time trying to find my cats in the smoke. My point is, it depends on the "event" to determine the reality of what you will take. If you only have minutes to leave, just because you believe you will remember to grab stuff does not make it true.

if you fail to plan you plan to fail...in Japan they leave their shoes beside their bed and there is a BOB at the door in case there is an earthquake and there is broken glass on the floor...most households follow this safety procedure. At our house we have a plan in place that starts with car alarm on night table to activate to draw attention to our home (fire, break-in )each of us have a set of clothes and shoes right by the bed in the event something happens (fire) and you have to flee the house in your pj's in the middle of the night, weapons 2 steps out of bedroom, the coats/purse 5 steps from there, binder on shelf I have to go by to get out, all the vehicles keys on wall there also, papers also on way out...If you do drills and plan your moves it will help you to remember to act that out during a crisis I think.

If there was a fire, I'm afraid most unless right there (perhaps sleeping in your room)wont make it unless they are waiting by the door...my cats don't necessarily come when called, dogs are better at doing that. In a home invasion Im not at all sure they would harm your pet...you never know

I don't like the fact that you are right 😥

Thanks for making me think a little more about this. I think we're looking at extremes here - you will either have days to grab things for your bug-out (hurricane is coming, hurricane is coming, hurricane is really coming, better leave now cause hurricane is absolutely coming, hurricane ARRIVES), or moments (enemy breaches your security measures, fire turns with the winds, tornado warning appears). We've been so focused on bug-in preparations, our bug-out is not as good. We'll have to change that!

Wow I never thought about my dogs

The needs of my critters have always been apart of my preps. My problem comes if I had to get them all out of the house in a hurry and at once. My car will hold my 3 cats cages and that's about it. It will not hold all of my critters at the same time, never mind stuff for me. Buying a vehicle large enough to hold everything I would want to take is on my goals list.

What I'm struggling with is if we have to bug out, we would not be able to take our dogs, as they would be quite likely to give away our position by barking if people happened along within sniffing/hearing distance.

Has anyone thought about this or found a way to keep a dog quiet or thought of a solution to this?

I'm very attached to my dogs and it would truly break my heart to have to leave them behind or worse.
