Tip of the day - If you carry a fire starting kit for outdoor survival make sure you include a chapstick or vaseline tube in your kit. This will of course be handy for keeping your lips kissable should you get lucky in the woods, however if you add a small amount to any form of tinder it will light more easily and burn for much longer. Even better than lip balm is the liquid inside a cylume/glowstick. This stuff is a great fire starter when mixed with a tinder!

Remember, every survival aid should preferably have more than one use.

I saw how to make an old fashion fire stater. It was made by burning a piece of cotton cloth with in a tin. Were you put the cloth in the tin and put it in a fire. When it comes out and cools, this burn cotton now is a supper fire starter. The missionary use it back when they were invading the first nations. Do you know of this fire starting method. ?

Hi Beth,

Yes, we call it a char-cloth, it works really well, basically all of the moisture in the cloth is removed during the charring process and it makes a great tinder. I did not know that it came from the missionaries though, that's interesting.

Thanks

Tip of the day #2 - Make yourself a "Hobo Stove"!

Take a tin with a lid (large tobacco tin is good) and pack it with strips of corrigated cardboard (cut from a normal cardboard box). Then light a couple of candles and drip the wax in to the tin all over the cardboard until all of the gaps, nooks and crannies are filled with wax, you may have to let it settle for a couple of minutes then top it up. Carry your stove with you whenever you are out and about, if needed light the stove using a lighter, the cardboard will act as a wick. At first you will have a small flame however within minutes the whole tin will be raging!. You will get about 40-50 minutes from one full stove and it really pumps out alot of light and heat, you can also put a metal military style mug on top of it to make a hot drink. Once you have finished the tin is hot and can be used as a hand/sleeping bag warmer. To refill simply add more wax, the cardboard should last for a fair few refills.

Give it a bash! Good luck.

Every day is a learning day.

Hi, great tips. Didn't know that about using the liquid from glow sticks as fire starter. (I only found out recently that Vaseline will burn, saw it on YouTube.)
Plus, the 40-50 min. burn time for the Hobo Stove is useful, something I've been curious about.
One of the first SHTF projects I made was the little pop can jet stove. Found the instructions on the Mungo says bah blog: http://www.mungosaysbah.com/
Looking forward to more of your tips.

🙂

Vaseline should always be a part of your survival kit....you can use it for...

Burns - helps healing (don't put on fresh burns....only burns that have already healed over)
Open wounds (prevents infection)
Prevent windburn
Prevents chaffing on my inner thighs when wearing Lederhosen
Kill lice (1 cm thick all over scalp for about four hours - suffocates them! Really!)
Reduces effects of posion ivy

etc etc etc

The list goes on...

Just a quick one, use fine wire wool across your cell phone battery terminals, the wool will catch alight!

Thanks

Here's one, use the silica gel packs from a new pair of shoes to help keep moisture out of containers. I use them in my ammo cans.

I often use dryer lint as tinder to light our fireplace.

i have a large thick layered blanket which will keep me toasty warm in case of a power outage...it also doubles as a crafty hiding place if attacked by vampires, zombies or werewolves.
