Searay yachts use an in water exhaust system for their big diesel engines. Meaning the exhaust is directed into/under the water surface. This really muffles the exhaust sound and again, being near them, you hardly know the two big diesels and generator engines are running. So maybe worth an experiment in a suburban setting. It takes a good discharge pressure but it does work. The other advantage of exhausting into water, is that odors are reduced and if you have a diesel generator, that is especially important. Now, in Canada, exhausting into water in the winter will be a challenge
Exhausting into water, at least with diesel engines works great. Have some of the old style 400 to 800 rpm units, with big flywheels, I have run the exhaust out to the rain barrel and the exhaust goes 100% quiet...all that can be heard is the clickiedy clack of the push rods going up an down. You just need to add some glycol for winter use.

Any anti freeze also can be used. Cheaper and easyer to get if shtf.
I would add that ethyl alcohol works as a great anti freeze.....though that is such a waste!

So this second Firman unit that I bought, and mentioned that it had greater resistance when pull starting. It is almost always a one pull and start unit, the other more a two pulls then it starts. I am suspecting that the timing gear is off a tooth between the two units. Its not a problem but I mention it anyway. Easy enough to do when your assembling a engine, or as I imagine hundreds a shift.

Firman generators seem to work well. Their price-point is far enough below the Honda to make me question why I spent so much on my primary Honda system. Live and learn... 🙂
None you improvise, one (or more) is luxury.
This is the coldest evening of the winter so far, its -19 right now. I just went outside and fueled up the 2nd Firman inverter and fired it up...one pull and away it goes at -19C. I am guessing 90 hrs on this unit now, engine is broke in.

That's hard to beat. You can't really ask for more than that.

Im happy with it. Would have been happier if I had got the first one for 500.00. I bought these when the price of gas hit 1.30 . Just fueled up the truck for .85 cents. My reason for buying these is dissapearing.

Wouldn’t beat yourself up to much. A good reason, is a good reason. Due to one issue or another, things will likely flip around.
I am closing in on 200hrs on this 2nd inverter. Still running all tickity boo.... not burning oil, starting fine....running boringly regular....

coldest morning so far, -24,-25. Unit started with one pull, did have to let it stay on choke for a little longer.

At -30 it took a half dozen pulls before it would fire..it took that many because the oil was so thick at -30 it was hard to turn the motor over.

Closing in on 300 hrs on this second unit. Its just sitting outside 24/7 and even down to -35 I start it just with the pull cord. I have to give it a half dozen pulls to get the oil moving at greater than -30, but it fires up on the 7th 8th pull. No complaints on that. My first unit wont start up with just the pull cord at all below -20 or so. So there is something different between the two units (I can ofcourse get it going by other means). I suspect its just a timming difference between the two.
For those in Calgary here is a brand new inverter generator unit for sale, still in its sealed box....220.00. It would already be in my truck if I was in Calgary
I would have posted it yesterday but I didn't think the add would last, but here it is still available.

So I loaned out my 1st firman inverter to a guy who is currently running a Honda 3000 inverter for battery charging....he has owned Honda 2000s and Honda 1000 before. He has been using his 3000 for a few years now...but tells me it is killing him in gas compared to what he remembers his 2000s using, he was going to go out and buy a new Honda 2000, but after trying my firman he tells me he will be getting one of them next payday. It looks like there are no sales on now, so that will cost about 650.00

I have bad news, the second Firman inverter I bought, the one I really liked because it would start so easy in the extreme cold just blew the main inverter board. Red overload light came on and rpms went to maximum….I am guessing 500 hrs on it. Well I guess I will get to find out what Costco/Firman's warranty is like, will be on the phone Thursday.
