All good suggestion/ideas, but I think we might be getting ahead of ourselves. We don't even have a network of caches as yet. I have started putting 2 sets of supplies with extra preps I have on hand (based on the list provided by helicopilot) and am going to stash these along routes I take when travelling. As we move along in this process I will be more than willing to share their locations.

GPRS, the bottles are packed. But I chose protein bars which have a fair bit of protein and carbs so it's better than a few President's Choice cheap stuff. As for caching them, I simply just ran out of time to go on a leisurely drive to put them away (sigh, if only life stopped getting in the way of my prepping!!!!) but I hope to do this soon. Frankly, they will probably be hidden in somewhat plain sight, such as behind a fence post with a few rocks piled around/over. There are plenty of desolate grid roads in my neck of the woods, just off highway 16 and 14 that I don't have to worry about them being taken.

I hope to have locations posted on CPN before the end of the month. Don't expect GPS coordinates though, just good old fashion "x marks the spot."

Like your idea, Helico'.
NOTE: I wouldn't likely use PC or other cheap bars. I prefer buying in bulk from Costco the better name bars, with high calorie content that also include a good protein and fiber mix.
I want to experiment this winter with making my own bars I can individually seal.

P.S. We may cross paths at some point yet as my explorations take me also around the Hwy 16 and 14 backroads.

P.P.S
Morbid thought, that I've had before, regarding marking caches: use a highway death marker/cross with the initials "CPN" on it. It can be hammered in, cairned with rocks or taped/strapped to a tree.

Morbid, but not a bad idea at all!!! The only issue I can think of though are the locals. Odds are they would know that no one died there and would be more likely to go snoop. Put that's making me think. If you come near my way, PM me, we can have at least 2 folks for a east-central AB meet! 😉

The alternative marker I thought of using was a large wooden squirrel sign, with my initials on it.
Squirrel away something! 😆
Squirrel is also a favorite topic Preppersaurus likes to talk about.

Well darn it... Life got in the way of deploying my cache bottles and now with a fresh 6" of snow on the ground, I suppose it will become a spring project. Any development anywhere else or has this project died due to lack of interest?

I'm still going to try the bottle caching even in winter as I feel this is something of importance no matter the season.

I have prepared two caches and have picked out one stop to place it and am still trying to figure out where I will put the second one. For now I will share its' location with a few of my friends but I am not opposed to sharing with the group if this takes off.

I picked up 8 metal wide mouth bottles a while back that were on special from Crappy Tire, each for 3$.
Was planning on dispersing about 4 of them along a walking route home from work.

Good to know some are moving forward with this. I really think this could be a valuable tool in difficult situations.

I think we should take this next few months to figure out a mapping and marking system.
Maybe something with Google Maps/
Any ideas welcome!

For those with Google earth, you can pin point specific spots (with longitudes and latitudes) using a push pin and copy the picture and send to email. Actual photos of landmarks or street names (if relevant) and a photo of the cache location should also be included. These would need to be printed out (in case we loose satellite signals) to form a collection of the network caches. I further suggest that each cache have a list on contents included in the reference documents. Just my 2 cents.

I agree that the database is important, but if no one caches anything then it's pointless. I might be able to go put 2 caches by the weekend. It seems like there are others that have caches but may or may not be willing to share locations of those. I think if 10% of the members here spent $15 and put even just one small cache like the ones I'm putting out, then there would already be a nice start across the whole country. Now if those caches are very large in content and quite expensive, I can understand why people wouldn't share. I personally think that for starter, and considering the size of our country, quantity may be better than quality.

I'm willing to share the locations of my bottle caches, by using Google Maps.
Note: whomever decides to set up a shared map first just needs to "share" their map to someone else's email. Then that map can be distributed to others' emails.
